SongQuest

About Me

SongQuest formed out of two bands (Song & Quest) in the early 1990's. I was playing in my first Prog band in college named, "Quest" (Randall, Tim & Dan). We wrote and performed for a couple of years before our bass player Dan died of a heroin overdose. Even though Tim & I wanted to keep Quest going, the fates tore us apart for a few years. In that time I started writing songs with Brad in a project called, "Song". Brad and I had worked together throughout the 1980's in Heavy Metal bands (Iron Cross & Spiritual Guardian). When it came time for us to get serious with our material, we recruited Tim as our drummer and formed SongQuest. In the beginning it was just Tim, Brad & I as we liked the idea of a power trio. But quickly we realized with the kind of material we were writing that we'd need another member to play our music properly live. That's when we asked our great friend Bob to join the band. Bob fit perfectly as he could switch instruments with me & Brad. All of us can play guitar, bass and keyboards as well as sing, so it became a lot of fun changing toys around and creating a variety of different music styles and sounds. It became a true SongQuest. Throughout the 1990's SongQuest wrote, recorded and performed constantly. The library of songs and CD's became an epic journey of experimentation and discovery. One of the discoveries we made turned out to be an evolution for the band. We discovered we could write our most fresh & passionate material out of improvization. So in the year 2000, SongQuest turned to a new chapter of creation and started jamming out themes and variations of small ideas. The resulting material sounded far more viseral and alive rather than contrived. The jam secessions got better and better as we tightened our skills with improve. We often will have a germ of an idea or some lyrics or even just I title, something to create an atomsphere, and jam it out in every possible direction. Then we'll go back and listen to the recordings and pull out the best bits and perfect them to form our songs. The tunes have since become epic (as you can see by our song lengths) as we've kept more and more of the good ideas from the original recordings. In 2007 SongQuest is alive and well, cranking out new material with a far better studio and ready to share our musical journey with the world. It has truly become a SongQuest. Our musical path has been filled with an everchanging landscape of exotic melodies, odd rythums, atomspheres and dark stories. The vaults have finally been opened, we welcome you all to enjoy our creations (smart monkey noise).Groovy, Randall (SongQuest/Epoch)
