MOMMA WAS A BAD MUTHA...SHUT YO MOUTH is set against a movin’, groovin’ house party deep in the sticks of Omaha, NE and becomes the backdrop for a universal story of a young girl’s untimely coming of age. From the countless bid whist card games, to the local veterinarian posing as the family pediatrician, there’s always something going on at Momma’s house—and it’s always happening to the old school jams from the late 70’s early 80’s. Within this tragically funny tale, Fylicia Renee’ King creates fifteen hilariously dysfunctional, and sometimes dark characters, ranging from the local Jewish news reporter, to the Mafia boss who owns a strip club, to momma’s closest friend -the drunken neighborhood garbage man I would like to thank my director: Adleane Hunter , executive producer Veronica Penn-Turner Stage Manager, Charles Edmonds and Nikki Brooks my press agent, Below is some additional information about The 2007 National Black Theatre Festival (www.nbtf.org)
Larry Leon Hamlin, who recently left this earth 6/6/07 prematurely, founded the National Black Theatre Festival,, (NBTF) in 1989. His goal was to unite black theatre companies in America and ensure the survival of the genre into the next millennium. With the support of Dr. Maya Angelou (who served as the Festival's first Chairperson) the National Black Theatre Festival,, was born. This Festival offered 30 performances by 17 of America's best professional black theatre companies. It attracted national and international media coverage. According to The New York Times, "The National Black Theatre Festival,, is one of the most historic and culturally significant events in the history of black theatre and American theatre in general." Over 10,000 people attended. It lived up to its theme: "An International Celebration and Reunion of Spirit."Held biennially, NBTF attracts more than 60,000 people during the six-day event. NBTF celebrated its 10th anniversary in 1999. The next NBTF will be held in Winston-Salem, NC, July 30 – August 4, 2007. Festival highlights will include the Opening Night Gala, Readers' Theatre of New Works, the Youth/Celebrity Project, International Colloquia, International Vendor's Market, Workshops and Seminars, and of course, over 100 theatrical performances. More than 50 celebrities of stage, screen and television are expected to attend. In 1999, NBTF introduced Fringe, a program designed to support and showcase collegiate theatre. To wrap-up the evening, join the nightly after show festivities at the celebrity receptions at the Embassy Suites Hotel.
