Biography
"Holy shit, I HAVE to be a part of this band.†Anyone with an ear for intrigue would most likely have the same reaction as Chris Folts did when fellow co-founding member James Bone first introduced Chris to what would ultimately become The Secret Theatre’s first demo, “Bury Me Winter.†“I’d only heard the ground work to the song, without drums, and then James just kind of instructed me what to play,†starts Folts. “After hearing the next couple of songs he’d written, putting them together as a full band was definitely enjoyable – I knew that there was something special about it so I was like, ‘alright, I have to be a part of this band. There’s no way I can’t be.’â€
Based in Raleigh, North Carolina and consisting of five permanent members (with guests helping out on strings, extra keys and even a second drum part), The Secret Theatre is: James Bone (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Chris Folts (drums, percussion, keyboard), AJ Aponte (bass), and Zack Sterman (guitar, backing vocals).
In regards to The Secret Theatre, James has used past mistakes to guide future success, “[With our old band], it all kind of went to hell. I couldn’t hit some of the notes that I’d written. We didn’t have a strong sense of identity – we were trying to be something that we really weren’t. So when I started writing music for (what became) The Secret Theatre, I just asked myself, what music do I make, that I don’t have to make – that just flows out of me naturally?†With that mentality in mind, the words and notes began to pour like a North Carolinian hurricane, destroying any doubts in their path and consuming thousands of fans and supporters along the way. “We’ve connected with our fans in a really good way; we have the opportunity to talk with everybody [using MySpace],†observes James. “I feel like that’s also helped us to get to where we are right now – being able to have that open line of communication with the people that like our music.â€
James continues, “I like doing it. I don’t think the cool thing to do is be those unapproachable, shadowy type people that don’t want to talk to anybody. I’m not that type of person anyway. To spend a couple of hours out of the day to talk to people who like my music…that doesn’t kill me.†With new age promotional tools like MySpace, James believes that the tide is turning and there are smarter, more efficient ways to get your band on display to the world, “If we had spent so much time and energy booking some tour across the country and playing for people who have never heard us, never seen us, don’t know anything about us, I just feel like that would have been time wasted. It’s changing, it’s not like that anymore, that’s not the only way to get your music heard – jumping in a van and going and playing in towns to 5 kids a night…I want people to hear it.†The combination of tight, well honed songs that are both familiar and relevant, and a sincere grassroots approach (“I think actually responding to a comment or message really connects your band to the fans.â€), has become a match made in heaven that helped drive The Secret Theatre to gain recognition far outside the borders of their native North Carolina.
The Secret Theatre is on the edge of breaking out. Their sound hooks you, conjuring up forgotten memories of Neutral Milk Hotel, with dream-like imagery and familiar melodies. Then, like a compulsion with an addict in its grasp, The Secret Theatre bombards you with full-on anthem rock bravado, (minus the flamboyance). With the music industry in desperate need of something fresh and new, The Secret Theatre are ready to be the perfect drug.
Welcome to Music 2.0, an era where people with acute tastes will be dearly rewarded with ear candy like no other. Things can get a little confusing, but don’t fret; your tour guides are more than familiar with the New World. If you look out the window to your right, you’ll see them arriving; introducing James, Chris, AJ, and Zack. Ladies and gentleman, The Secret Theatre.
