Ruth Notman

About Me

Ruth was a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2007. She was then signed to Mrs Casey Records and spent the next year writing songs, gigging around the country at festivals and folk clubs and also spent time in the studio recording her debut album - Threads.
Threads demonstrates Ruth’s pure and powerful voice which stunningly conveys stories of love, loss, adventure and heartache, weaving through simple stripped down ballads and soaring above sweeping strings arrangements. Her quirky piano melodies and catchy guitar riffs are augmented on the album with cello from Hannah Edmonds, melodeon from Saul Rose (Waterson:Carthy, Whapweasel), fiddle from Roger Wilson (Wood:Wilson:Carthy) and harmony singing from Bella Hardy.
Threads has already achieved much critical acclaim with top reviews in The Guardian, Mojo, The Independent, BBC Radio 2 and fRoots, among others. Kate Rusby and Mike Harding have both cited it as one of their top albums and The Indepedent recently named it as an album of the week. With a string of live dates planned through the Spring/Summer, Ruth's star looks set to continue its ascent.

"Further proof that the British folk scene is in remarkably fine shape comes from an 18-year-old from Nottingham, who has recorded one of the most assured, varied and impressive debut albums of the year. Notman is remarkable fr her confident, mature and sensitive vocal and instrumental work and for the bold range and variety in her choice of material.... Notman is little known right now, but that, I suspect, is soon going to change." **** The Guardian

An eighteen year old with such a spark in her voice it's hard to see how she can fail" **** Mojo

Album of the Week: "A new voice in British Folk, Ruth Notman has gathered together a fine ensemble for her recording debut- a mix of melodeons, fiddles, guitars and a fine chiaroscuro of harmony vocals- plus a collection of songs including Nic Jones' classic 'Billy Don't You Weep For Me' and Dougie Maclean's 'Caledonia'. Notman has a fantastic voice well suited to plumb the bottomless well of the British folk-ballad tradition. The Independent

"A great new talent" John Tams

“I was just totally blown away...absolutely brilliant. She is going to be around for a long long time” Kate Rusby
