Petals On A Wet Black Bough
-Turn The Car Around (ORDER NOW)
Available from 29th September is the limited-edition single by Petals On A Wet Black Bough. 'Turn The Car Around' promises to be one of the most desirable indie 7â€s this year. Combining intricate guitars with a twisted, widescreen aesthetic this debut will no doubt resonate with fans of Radiohead’s In Rainbows, TV On The Radio or even David Friedman's super-saturated production on Flaming Lips.
Having operated behind the scenes for a while now, performing as lead guitarist in erstwhile Deltasonic band The Wandering Step, and Manchester noisemakers Former Bullies – even enjoying a stint as part of Daniel Johnston’s live band – Roocroft took to writing his own material.
He has emerged with Turn The Car Around, a single that’s at once grounded in classic songwriting and exquisitely leftfield (self-)production, suggesting parallels with the electro-acoustic wizardry of David Sitek, while his incisive lyrics highlight an admiration for the melancholic wanderings of Elliott Smith. On the B-Side comes the equally compelling In Your Sleep, another arresting piece of writing, haunted by arcing string bends and spectral blues of Loren Connors-like proportions. There’s no doubt this magnificent opener will pave the way for an equally accomplished full-length.
Spokes
-People Like People Like You
People Like People Like You, is the debut record from Manchester quintet Spokes. It’s a contemplative affair with more than a little nod to slow-core and shoe-gaze, yet always manages to feel like a warm hug while their contemporaries appear to be simply going through the motions.
Half the band are from the rolling hills of County Durham, which perhaps explains the rustic feel of their reverb-soaked, violin-coated sound, even when combined with their very digital sounding laptop embellishments.
This could all make for a very introspective record, but there is enough tension and raw energy, even in Spokes’ quiet moments, to remind us during the coming months, that stomping on crunchy brown leaves on a frosty morning while wrapped up like Rupert the Bear, is actually a lot of fun.
