What is ZINE? Where did it come from?
It all began as “Four Bands Outta Lonnie†a lazy Sunday gig in the St Leonards Pub beer garden late 2006. earnings from the gig would have made each musician just under $14.30, not much. But put together it was enough to make a CD featuring these bands, 200 copies in fact. All involved figured this was far more beneficial for their musical endeavours than pocketing a few dollars. Some were given away, most were sold and many new fans were reached. Somewhere in between, Outta Lonnie’s philosophy came to light.Run by Anthony Beveridge and Nick Chugg, Outta Lonnie as it stands today is a non profit cooperative dedicated to the development, promotion and distribution of original music from Tasmania.
Our current projects include the continued production of compilation CD's, the running of showcase events for Musicians and Artists, and most recently, the development of our very own music and arts magazine called ZINE. Our aim is to build on strengths within the arts and music community, and provide an unbiased and equal opportunity of promotion to musicians and artists alike.
Our CD’s are intended as a ‘taste tester’ for local music and are sold dirt cheap to encourage new listeners to check out some of the magic that’s going on around them. Hopefully they’ll discover a band they like and go out to see them play, or buy their CD. This scenario has played out quite a few times already.
As for the gigs, we aim to provide bands with a high standard of production with professional sound, lighting and backline. In turn, we aim to bring the public an evening of musical diversity and quality entertainment in a comfortable and relaxed environment. We also run a merchandise stand and art gallery showcasing submitted works which in the past has included abstract paintings and photography.
