Jeff Gay & Special Blends

About Me

JEFF GAY & SPECIAL BLENDS are a rollicking, good-timey band that reside in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As the summer unfolds, a sturdy lineup has undertaken to spread their good vibes merrily throughout the town
The group began when songwriter Jeff Gay, guitarist Evan Cardwell and drummer Kris Moulton recorded an album of music with producer Charles Austin. Twelve songs (one co-written by Cardwell) were recorded, many of which had been in the JGAY canon for years and performed with various groups
The current lineup of the Special Blends are attempting to learn (and relearn) the music from KINDLY REQUESTS, the album they recorded. Moreover, songs for a second lp are being jammd out as often as they can be. The boys play a few choruses of Marquee Moon by Television to get warmed, then play You Like It?! Let's Do It!? for, like, eight minutes. Complete with reggae chorus. Gratuitous stuff and not for the faint of heart, but all in good fun
With bassist Chris Pennell on drums (?), the group plans to throw all caution to the wind. Lately, the boys go over the tunes a few times and play Reflections Rockin' 4 Dollars when they get their nerve up. Good old boys. I am talking good boys - no flies on them. They talk about relevant things like girls and bicycles. I am talking good, hanging out at the five and dime and such
Bassist Glen Leck draws up some real nice pictures and they talk about art work for a little while. Then they jam Reaction, Red Earrings, a few other things. Laid back. Never for too long a time. After all, The Island Greek Restaurant is often right around the corner. And no one really talks about applying for festivals or driving to Yarmouth at present. They are, of course, planning. Nothing like getting out of here for a little while... as long as Gay can bring his "board"...
...not that they don't love it here, cuz they do. No city is as fair, none is so true. However, you try to make a good thing last by not thinking about all of the crazy things, like trying to live here when the man wants to take it all from you - GIMME A BREAK!!! Anyway, when the boys are jamming, they don't even think about all that, they are just having a good time trying to keep up with Chris. But when they dream, they dream big - good old boys!!!
The next album is gonna be called RICKETY ROW. It will probably be done with Charles Austin again, but this time we will be a real band, used to covering up mistakes. This thing is gonna be all about a city somewhere that is very quiant but has one dude who just can't live with all its freaky changes. This place isn't Halifax, by the way. Anyway, I guess we're thinking its like the VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY, except this album would come with a map of RICKETY ROW and all of the names mentioned in the songs would be on this map. Fifteen of them, also like VGPS. Glen has a year to get the album art done, officially
