About Me

Tobias was born in London, but is a country boy at heart. Leaving London age 6, he was brought up in deepest rural Kent. His great passion as a kid was playing tennis. He spent every spare minute on a tennis court or hitting balls against the wall, training at the weekends and playing tournaments on the junior circuit during the holidays. His heroes were the likes of Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe and the tumbling Boris Becker. He attended Perry Court Waldolf School until the age of 14, before going away to Frensham Heights School, near Farnham, Surrey. From there he went on to Stratford-upon-Avon College, where he first started to explore acting. He then won a place at RADA, graduating in 1998. He is best known for his starring role as Marcus Junius Brutus, Julius Caesar's assassin, in the HBO/ BBC epic series ROME.He began his acting career in some of British television's most popular series including Foyle's War and Midsomer Murders. More recently, he played Blunkett’s belligerent aide in the controversial drama ‘A Very Social Secretary’ directed by Jon Jones, which launched More4.Films includes ‘The Low Down’ with Aidan Gillen, ‘Pierrepoint’ with Timothy Spall, and Tobias plays M's right hand man, Villiers, in the James Bond film 'Casino Royale'.He has worked extensively in the theatre, his credits including the young teacher, Irwin, in Alan Bennett's The History Boys at the Royal National Theatre, and Michael Blakemore's West End production of Three Sisters for which he was nominated for the Ian Charleson Award. His interpretation of Irwin in The History Boys was noted by the critics for bringing out the character's vulnerability. He was also noted for his performance as Hamlet in Rupert Goold's production in 2005.In April 2007 he appeared as William Elliot in ‘Persuasion’ as part of ITV's Austen season, and played Trifimov in Jonathan Miller’s production of ‘The Cherry Orchard’ at Sheffield Crucible alongside Joanna Lumley. He is due to appear this September as Derrick Sington in Channel 4's dramatisation, ‘The Relief of Belsen’. It tells the extraordinary true story of the British 2nd Army’s struggle to avert a humanitarian disaster as typhoid swept through the Belsen concentration camp following its liberation.
