Judge David Young has built a reputation in the Florida courts as a tough, creative, and provocative judicial figure with an unexpected sense of humor. His headline grabbing decisions have run the gamut from stern to unorthodox. In 2005, Young sent a tough message to two America West pilots accused of flying while intoxicated. Young handed out harsh prison sentences and revoked their pilot licenses. In a separate and unusual ruling, Young decided it was only appropriate to lock up an 87-year-old woman for 31 years -- the same number of years she had spent on the lam prior to her arrest for murder. Another of his creative judgments included dropping an elderly opera singer's disorderly conduct charges in exchange for a virtuoso courtroom performance.
