I was 18 when I got the sudden unexplained urge to play the drums (Better late then never as they say). I had been working as a partime barman, funding myself through college (to be honest - making a few bob for the big boozing & music sessions that we used to have every Thurs nite), when the drummer from the band that had been gigging in the venue the previous night, thankfully left his kit behind for collection the next day. He even left it set up, sticks & all..... Yea, you guessed it - curiosity kicked in - had a go - that was it - hooked. Thanks Barry, I owe you a lifetime of pleasure.
I starved in college for the next few months & bought my first kit. It totally consumed all of my free time. Beside playing the kit, what also appealed to me about the drums was the many different ways the kit could be constructed & how the whole setup could be rearranged & personalised. I think it's very important for a drum kit to look well, after all it is CENTERSTAGE. After a full summers, nonstop 100% imput into getting to grips with the basics, I joined the college band & was on my way......
Over the years, I have played every style of music from Rock, Pop, Jazz, Soul, Blues, Swing & Traditional Irish Music . I have played with hundreds of musicians, some of whom were worthy of the world's stage. There is no point in naming names as I enjoyed playing with each & every one of them. On second thoughts I will mention one band - ' SHADOWFAX '. An 80's band that I was very proud to be part of. A very unique sounding band, that were musically leading the way (Unfortunately, ahead of their time).
Every band/musician presents a new challenge. I believe, from a drummers point of view, & no matter what style of music you are playing, you can do the job required of you & get your own personal satisfaction at the same time. Music & drumming are important to me, so much so, that outside of the music circle, all I think about is: How do I fill that break? - How will I end this section? - What intro will I do here? - How will I play a steady 4/4 & make it sound different?.......
Music is my life & is also very good to me. All my true friends are musicians & what a good bunch of people they are. All they want to do is, create beautiful music (have fun doing it), write meaningful lyrics that come from the heart & deliver them passionately in front of a live audience"... There ya go - What a load of shite!!..
