On the 5th of October 1999, a four-piece band known as "Dumb Luck" was formed by Quinn Allman, Jepha Howard, Branden Steineckert, & Ashton Johnson. Not long after the release of their EP, Dumb Luck went through a few line-up changes. Eventually the band changed their name from "Dumb Luck" to "Used". Jepha Howard, at the time was the lead singer, decided to change play bass the band was forced to find a new singer. Quinn Allman remembered Bert McCracken from school, so Bert was asked to take over lead vocals. "Used" sent the songs they recorded at Jepha's house to producer John Feldmann, lead singer & guitarist from punk band Goldfinger. After hearing the song "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" he immediately called them to record a demo. In January 2001 the band had offically formed. After being signed by Reprise Records the band was then forced to change their name to "The Used" because it was discovered that a Boston band had already taken the name. The line-up remained unchanged until September 12, 2006 when it was announced that drummer Branden Steineckert would no longer be apart of "The Used". It was later that year that "The Used" announced the name of their new drummer; Dan Whitesides from the "New Transit Direction"; who would replace Branden Steineckert who had since joined "Rancid" to replace former drummer Brett Reed.
