About Me

Text
Plain was born in Suva, Fiji Islands where he lived for eight years. “Life was simple but I was content” says Plain. "Material things was not the focus, happiness was”. Plain’s family had to leave the Islands due to the coup in 1988 because of unsafe living conditions & a hostile environment. He then lived in New Zealand where he lived for another 5 years before finally migrating to the United States with his family hoping for a better life with more oppurtunites. Plain spent his teen years growing up in Hayward (Bay Area), California. His family had to face poverty & struggled to stay afloat because of immigration issues such as the green card. Plain was quick to adapt to his surroundings and was exposed to the street life at an early age. Although good at heart, Plain found comfort in the streets because he met people who faced the same struggles as him. Being a minority, poverty, racism & coming from a dysfunctional family, was something Plain & his friends all had in common.

Plain always had a passion for music. Especially hip hop. From the first day he heard hip hop, he instantly fell in love with the art! “Dr. Dre & Snoop – Nuthing But A G Thang”, Bone Thugs, 2 Pac, Eazy, to the Yay Area rappers like San Quinn & E-40 all had an influence on me”, states Plain. Plain started rapping in 1995. Recording mixtapes & doing shows wherever possible. Plain, Fiji Born & other friends formed a rap group called “591”. They also started a record label named Functional Addict Records. This label was home to 591. 591 released their freshman album “Haystatic” in 2003. This was more or less a learning experience. In 2005 they released their sophomore album “Blue Skies and Palm Trees”. This album had a lot to offer & did well in the Bay Area. They collaborated with artists JT Tha Bigga Figga, Luni Coleone, Sean T, Metal Mouth Productions, Shadow (of Northern Expozure) and more.

Wasting no time, Plain jumped right back into the studio, to work on his solo album “The Main Event”. He collabed with a lot of Bay Area artists such as Turf Talk, Goldie (of The Federation), San Quinn, Big Rich, Sean T, Mistah Fab, Dem Hoodstarz, Haji Springer, Scweez, Fed-Ex (of The Mob Figaz), Fiji Born, Eighteen & Allie Baba.

Plain considers the music industry to be a constant up hill battle. But he also feels that he has come a long way. From rapping in garages at house parties, auditioning for shows, selling Cds in front of gas stations, music stores & having to deal with verbal & physical altercations. To finally, start getting respect as a professional artist & recognition for his skills, rather than to be looked at as just another guy with a mic in his hand. Just recently, Plain also did a photo shoot with a Bay Area clothing company called “Catch 22 Clothing” which is also getting him a lot of recognition.

Plain is currently working on his sophomore album “Pull My Finger”, which he claims will be his best album yet. “Pull My Finger” will be different from the other albums because Plain is not expecting features to help him shine. He has lyrically stepped his game up & is ready to show the world that he can pull his own weight & deserves to shine. He also feels like he’ll have more fun with this album. “I don’t feel pressured this time. I’m not out to please people. I’m finna just make good music for the people who appreciate it!” Features on this album include Mr Kee, Rell Dert, Tony Streets, Sleepz & other local spittaz he ran into while doin shows. He has already shot a video to tha first single “Get Used 2 It” which is already creating a buzz for the highly anticipated album.

“12 years later & I’m still here grinding! Struggling but still hustling. I’ve been often misjudged by people, even in my own community. Looked upon with hateful eyes & envied. People don’t understand what artists go through. Being in such a competitive industry is nothing easy. All some people see is a CD, an album that they so quickly judge. Either it’s to their liking or they could care less about it. Few empathize with the artists struggles. Few see the hard work & the countless amount of hours and money I put into my music. Not to mention the precious time I lose which I could’ve spent with my family. But I keep talking to myself…”you can’t give up, you can’t give up!! I use the negativity to motivate myself. I feel proud of my accomplishments. To be a voice in hip hop, & to be the voice of the Fiji Islands in the hip hop community. I get a rush out of doing shows and get a great sense of satisfaction after rocking the crowd! This is when I think about those who thought of me as a failure. Getting off the stage I tend to have a slight grin, as I’m thinking to myself…Yeah, I got the last laugh now!!!!!
