Red Quiet

About Me

aRED QUIET is a band from Cambridge. Since their formation in December of 2006, they have played 50 or 49 shows. This season’s highlights included a sold-out show at the Middle East Upstairs, the final residency at the now-defunct Abbey Lounge (the band claims they put the joint out of business), and a few shows at Church of Boston, their new favorite treehouse. In addition, the band has played shows at TT the Bear’s, O’Brians, PA’s Lounge, Pierre Menard Gallery, 119 Gallery, Bard College, the New Wave Cafe, Our House, Jacque’s Underground, Olivia’s Basement, All Asia, a few dank shithole basements in Allston, and a half dozen other places they no longer remember, or care to forget. The band’s first official release, titled Sitting in a Fireball with your Fingers Crossed is being hailed as a hipster-antidote by at least one person on the planet earth, and at least one other kid knows the lyrics to the final track. That first EP was recorded mostly at the Bad Box—the slumly residence of guitarist and spiritual guru Dr. Q. One of the songs from that EP was included in the Infinite Limbs Compilation 2, but no one in the band ever heard it. Future plans include a full length record, to be recorded sometime in May or June of 2009, and a few short tours up and down the megalopolis. The Spring will also see the launch of Orbis Tertius, a tiny record label committed to limited releases of compilations and EPs from bands you never heard, which is a pet project of a few of the Quiets. At the very base of it all, Red Quiet is filled with nice people. They like to hear from people, and are always willing to play shows here or there. They especially like meeting musicians from other cities, and they always offer couches and beers to bands passing through Cambridge and Boston. The members of Red Quiet would also like to thank all of the bands and peoples that have become their friends over the past year or two, including, but not limited to: The Darker Hues, Ralph Eats Dynamite, Streightangular, Health&Beauty, Amigazo, Polk Records, the Beasts of England, the New Collisions, Team Shred, Greg Fox, the Musical Theatre, Mike from Lowell, Danny Glover, the Big Big Bucks, Jess Pithie, Shayne Murray, southSIDE Glen, all their mommas, Gary Bussolari and everyone who’s ever grabbed a Red Quiet sticker and stuck it where a traffic cop can’t reach.

Influences: It's hard to describe Red Quiet's music specifically. It's not "emo", not "metal," not "punk," not "post-rock." You can't really say that they are like Interpol, or Tool, or Soundgarden, or The Stooges, or any of the bands a certain section may channel. The music is, at bottom, an organic construction of different genres at their best moments, based around a tight control of dynamics. You can hear 90s alternative, early punk, post-rock, glam, late 60s New York, and a host of influences, but the songs are built piece by piece, using different elements and eras to create something powerful and original. There are no obvious chord progressions, no "solos," just beautiful guitar lines and driving drums and bass, each section flowing smoothly into the next. It is certainly "heavy" music, thrashy and experimental. But it is never morbid, droning, or melodramatic, the common pitfalls of music on the "darker side" of indie rock (while the other side must avoid being precious and bland). ~http://www.bostonbandcrush.com

"'Ladderlegs’ fidgety garage rock would have elicited a glowing review, except I’m pretty sure their bassist slapped a Red Quiet sticker on my back without my permission or knowledge. I was bamboozled into looking silly, but [at] least I was far from alone." -- Barry Thompson, The Boston Phoenix
