I like live music, though I'm too busy or lazy to check out bands as often as I used to. I like films, but that could be partially because I LOVE popcorn. I love books, but seem to accumulate them more than read them. I could live in a bookstore. I like to write and someday will do that daily and religiously. I like to work out, but it's more fun with a partner. Mainly, I just like to sit with friends and have good beer and better conversation.
Here's what I'm seeking, although more figuratively than literally: I want friends who are up for a movie at the last minute. I want friends who call me to meet them at Showdown for a beer at random times. I want friends who are available to go check out a cool band with me on (here's the kicker) a work night. I want friends who will sit on my deck with me and talk about life. Basically, I want that kind of solid, wonderful friendship that becomes more rare with age. I want a best friend.
I go through phases of favorites. Currently in heavy rotation: Fiona Apple, Damien Rice, Mike Doughty, Johnny Cash, Ben Lee, Tristan Prettyman, Smoosh, Gemma Hayes, Tilly and the Wall and Imogen Heap. ALWAYS in heavy rotation: Ani Difranco, Tracy Chapman, Sinead O'Connor, Patty Griffin, Liz Phair, Slobberbone, Tenacious D, and, when I'm feeling sassy, Britney Spears (don't you dare judge me).
I have a host of favorites, including, but not limited to: Heavenly Creatures, The Incredible True Adventures of Two Girls in Love, Me Without You, Shopgirl, Amelie, Before Sunset, The Bridges of Madison County, In America, School of Rock, The Shipping News, Slackers, Stealing Beauty, and Unfaithful.
This is where I have to be painfully honest with myself--I love crappy t.v. I like good shows, too, though. Like, I loved Arrested Development. And The Office is my favorite show ever. But I also love Desperate Housewives, The Bachelor, Lost, Made, and the Amazing Race. See? It's a modpodge. Geez, I watch too much t.v.
Again, I have a shelf of favorites and a dozen shelves of unread possibilities. Among the ones I do adore: Geek Love, Why Girls are Weird, The Poisonwood Bible, Sloppy Firsts, Second Helpings, Jemima J, The Cheerleader, Girl, and She's Come Undone. Also, I am sickly fascinated with the Holocaust, so I read lots of books about that.
You know, anyone who know himself, improves himself and loves himself is my hero. Specifically meeting that criteria was my dad, who died in June. I guess my goal in life is to feel confident enough with my choices and my heart that I think I'm a good person the majority of the time. Anyone who has accomplished that is my hero, indeed.
