It occurred near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania thus earning its name. It was when the South commanded by General Lee, tried to get near Washington, Maryland, for a chance to ruin the north's hopes of winning. Because, Washington, Maryland was the capitol of that time, luckily General Meade was there and the 2 forces fought. After 3 days, over 50,ooo Americans died. There 23,005 casualties from the Union with 3,155 dead, 14,532 wounded, 5,369 captured or missing. There was only 1 stray bullet that killed a normal civilian who was making bread. The Union had a large advantage in this war, they controlled the hills in the field, thus having a good aim on all sides. The Union won and this was a huge victory for the Union. It was the one of the two turning points of the war.
