He's the son of a mill worker who came from nothing, and lived the American dream. Learning the value of hard work from his father, John Edwards "developed his strong belief that all Americans deserve an equal opportunity to succeed and be heard".
Edwards went onto be the first man in his family to successfully graduate college. He worked his way through North Carolina State University where he graduated with high honors in 1974, and then earned a law degree with honors in 1977 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
John Edwards then began his career as a lawyer "standing up against the powerful insurance industry and their armies of lawyers, John helped these families through the darkest moments of their lives to overcome tremendous challenges."
He would take his passion for people and their well being to the campaign trail in 1998, when he won an United State Senate seat in North Carolina. Some of the issues Edwards championed were: quality health care, better schools, protecting civil liberties, preserving the environment, saving Social Security and Medicare, and reforming the ways campaigns are financed.
Senator Edwards, believing our nation was on the wrong course, ran for President in 2004. And in the summer of that year was choose by Senator John Kerry as his Vice Presidential running mate. Edwards brought the message of hope and opportunity to the campaign, and made people believe in "one America" again!
Since that election, John has been working hard on issues such as minimum wage increases and poverty. He is also the former Director of the Center on Poverty, Work, and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
