Paul Sprang

About Me

Paul Sprang was born the 26th of April 1960. At the tender age of 5 he began studying classical piano. He was considered a ‘Wunderkind’, and soon started mesmerizing audiences in concert houses all around Europe. For his ninth birthday his less gifted brother taught him three chords he did not know, and Paul changed his musical course drastically. Which three chords this were, is still in dispute. But the important thing is that a new musician was born: an improviser and a composer. Not content with his remarkable capabilities as a pianist, Paul took up percussion and soon was considered a better percussionist than piano player. As to why he choose percussion he once said “Ehmmm…”. Now in his teens, he toured the world in totally selfless support of other performers, until his composition “Why I hate cheese” became a top seller in 24 countries. In 23 of these countries (in France, which is considered to be a difficult market for cheese-hating songs, it reached only the number two spot) this modern classic became number one. He now decided to go out on his own, scoring hit after hit. He toured constantly and his concerts became bigger and bigger. All over the world, from the Opera House in Sydney to the legendary open air concert in Anchorage, Alaska, where his performance defrosted 16.000 Inuit, he gave his all. But it was too much. When he barely escaped an enthusiastic mob after his so-called ‘Sheep-concert’ on the Falkland Islands, he decided that enough was enough. He bought the island next to that of his good friend Marlon Brando, and retired.Or so it seemed, because he is BACK with a vengeance. New projects combining all of his funk, jazz and world music talents are conquering (my) space. Taking the lessons he learned from his rich past performing as and in Jamback, Jatzwerk, El Combo Mezclado, M’Poepoeh, KKKeng!, De Frapama's and the Gonzalez Brothers (his perhaps most notorious project, since they never performed in public!), he is taking this opportunity to bring to you, the listener, his greatest achievements as a musician and a human being.Peace!
