The German Fansite has interviewed GEMMA CLARKE (ex-drummer of Babyshambles) about her new band "THE KRAK".
1. Please tell something about the formation of
THE KRAK? Whose idea was it and how did you know
each other?
Gemma: Claire and I were in The Suffrajets together for 3years, we had started writing a lot of songs together aside form the Suffrajets and last october (2006) i decided it was time to end The Suffrajets (ive kept the 'Jets going for 11 years so it felt about time!) so we decided to put a band together to play these songs live. Claire met Ben at a house party...he was playing accoustic guitar in the kitchen at about 5am and she brought him down to meet me and have a jam and I found Tom on the internet... the 4 of us just gelled instantly and we started writing songs together in November '06...and here we are! The plan changed a lot when we all met, in the sense that Claire and I felt that this was a band we wanted to take to the top and luckily the boys agree so it is a serious career, not just a band to play songs live!
2. How would you describe your music to people, who
haven't heard from you before?
Gemma:Its quite a difficult one, (as im sure all bands say!) we are all influenced from such different genres and as we all contribute to writing the songs, they have a mixed sound. Easiest description would be Indie/pop/rock..... we have a very varied sound... you would only decide by listening to all of our tracks and deciding for yourself!
3. Do any other bands/musicans inspire you?
Gemma:as i said, we have very varied influences ; Ben (bass) is mainly influenced by 60s stuff eg. the beatles. he also loves The Cooper Temple Clause, Chas n Dave, Nirvana. Tom (guitar) loves Brian Jonestown Massacre, Libertines, Kooks, Cat empire and a bit of Bob Dylan. Claire (lead guitar) is heaviily influenced by Nuno Bettencourt (dunno how thats correctly spelt!) and heavier stuff like System of a Down. Claire is classically trained so her writing and playing always involves a fiddly bit og guitar! My influences vary from Joss Stone to Guns n Roses, Motley Crue, AcDc and anything from the 80s cheese metal genre!!
4. Do you write/produce the songs of yourselves?
Gemma:all our songs are written and produced by ourselves, although when the time comes for us to afford a top producer, we will gladly work with him/her on the production of the songs!!
5. How important are the meaning of the lyrics for you
and do your lyrics have any autobiographical
features?
Gemma: our lyrics are very easy to understand. we share a pet hate of cryptic lyrics that dont really make sense! our songs are appealing to everyone, most people can releate to at least one of our songs! Backseat Driver is about exactly that! Delays is about Public transport and being stuck in traffic. I Cant Seem To... is about being so angry with a loved one/partner you cant stop thinking about them, You Dont Know is about someone you care about being totally out of control.... and theres loads more! All of the lyrics were written by us, either alone or together at some point and most of them are autobiographical!
6. What is the main difference between other
conventional alternative-rock bands and THE KRAK?
Gemma:we have a commercial edge. we are 'rock' but also 'pop' and 'indie' in places....theres also a hint of 'punk' running through the set. we are radio friendly too, many other rock bands only make it into specialist shows or magazines, we think we will cover everything....from daytime mainstream radio and press, through to the specialist shows also, due to the variation of songs!
7. What are your future plans?
Gemma:world domination!!! we dont see the point in aiming for any less than the top! we want festival headlines, number one selling music and sold out stadium tours! we are having fun and we want people to join in and have fun with us!
8 . Is there anything else you would like say?
Gemma:COME ON LETS KRAK ON!!!
A big thanks to THE KRAK esp. Gemma Clarke for taking the time and Jonny Awsum.
