GELLM is Quad Rod, Smarty, and DJ Jester. The trio officially became a band in 2001. Genuine Electric Latin Love Machine borrows its name from an eclectic early Moog record by Richard Hayman. They recorded an album, Introducing the Neat Beat (2002, Compulsive), and a vinyl-only remix EP called Reducing the Neat Beat (2003, Compulsive). Both were hailed by critics from the Wire, URB, Giant Robot, and Spin. In 2004, a label from Australia called Peeping Tom released it down under. The band’s influences range from lounge to hip-hop to traditional country. In addition to Jester’s zany turntable antics, there are layers of instrumentation gathered from many different sources: cell phones, tape recorders, computers, guitars, and thrift store records.
