About Me

MyGen Profile Generator Born in 1984, Lawrence Folvig began playing guitar at the age of 12. His keen interest in improvisation led him to The Victorian College of The Arts where he completed his Bachelor of Music specializing in Improvisation in 2005. In the same year Lawrence was also joint recipient alongside Trombonist Shannon Barnett of “The Dr. Phillip Law Award” for innovation. Whilst studying at VCA he formed many strong musical relationships some of which developed into projects such as BUMFORD a trio including Saxophonist Lachlan Mclean and Drummer Ben Hendry. The trio likes to explore the countless ways of interacting sonically with Texture, Groove and Melody by means of Improvisation and a collection of Lawrence’s compositions. Collaborations and Performances past and present have included David Tolly, Ren Walters, Eamon Mcnelis, Phil Bywater, Myles Mumford, Steve Richards, Shannon Barnett, Joe Talia, Adam Simmons, Mark Hannaford, Adrian Sheriff, Rory Brown, Julian Wilson, Will Guthrie, Clayton Thomas. Lawrence has also performed at a number of festivals in Melbourne including Melbourne International Jazz Festival (2004) Melbourne Arts Festival (2005/2007) Liquid Architecture 6 Sound Art Festival (2005) Half Bent Jazz Festival (2005) Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival (2006,2007). Lawrence has also been an active member of The Make It Up Club since 2003 as a performer, curator, MC and box office attendant. The Make It Up Club is a collective of musicians in Melbourne that have been organizing Improvised Music performances by local, interstate and international artists every Tuesday night for 10 years. Lawrence’s playing style often includes using found objects on his guitar as a means of extending the instrument’s capabilities for creating sound. His current focus is creating music that exists primarily in the recorded realm often using experimental recording techniques as part of the creative process. His recording “HIGHWAY” (March 2007) features 2 solo improvisations that were recorded in a storm water drain under a Melbourne Freeway. This recording is available for free download from this page and a hard copy is available via email at: [email protected]
