About Me

So here's what's coming this year:
- I joined the Navy.
- I'm going to boot camp in March or before if I choose to request an earlier ship date. Seems like a long way off, but when you're staring down a well, it doesn't really seem like the fall will take that long.
- After A and C school, I don't really plan on coming back.
- I'd like to be stationed somewhere in Europe. Italy looks appealing.
- This year will be all about preparation and saying goodbye.
- It's exciting and it's scary and it seems right.
- And, honestly, after everyone telling me never to go into the military, you guys had to see this one coming.
Well, here we go.
Haha.
"Art is long and life is short, and success is very far off, and thus, doubtful of strength to travel so far, we talk a little about the aim-the aim of art, which, like life itself, is inspiring, difficult-obscured by mists. It is not the clear logic of a triumphant conclusion; it is not in the unveiling of one of those heartless secrets which are called the Laws of Nature. It is not less great, but only more difficult.
To arrest, for the space of a breath, the hands busy about the work of the earth, and compel men entranced by the sight of distant goals to glance for a moment at the surrounding vision of form and color, of sunshine and shadows; to make them pause for a look, for a sigh, for a smile-such is the aim, difficult and evanescent, and reserved only for a very few to acheive. But sometimes, by the deserving and the fortunate, even that task is accomplished. And when it is accomplished-behold!-all the truth of life is there: a moment of vision, a sigh, a smile-and the return to an eternal rest."
-Joseph Conrad
“Now goes under, and I watch go under, the sun
That will not rise again.
Today has seen the setting, in your eyes, cold and senseless as the sea,
Of friendship better than bread, and of bright charity
That lifts a man a little above the beasts that run.
That this could be!
That I should live to see
Most vulgar Pride, that stale obstreperous clown,
So fitted out with purple robe and crown
To stand among his betters! Face to face
With outraged me in this once holy place,
Where Wisdom was a favoured guest and hunted
Truth was harbored out of danger,
He bulks enthroned, a lewd, an insupportable stranger!
I would have sworn, indeed I swore it:
The hills may shift, the waters may decline,
Winter may twist the stem from the twig that bore it,
But never your love from me, your hand from mine.
Now goes under the sun, and I watch it go under.
Farewell, sweet light, great wonder!
You, too, farewell, — but fare not well enough to dream
You have done wisely to invite the night before the darkness came.”

Music:

20080824:

I've found that a lot of songs are doing a pretty good job of summing up the ethos of my life right now. Sometimes these songs can affect my mood, bringing me up or down, because, at some level, they are reflecting something that is happening with me. So, if you'd like, you can take a listen. They may not be in a particular order, but, in the future, if it seems like they begin to mesh well to tell an overall story, then I'll put them in a certain order. For now, I'm just getting them down.

My Current Playlist as of 20080920:

Books:

"Measure squatted down again. 'I can't always do that, Al, cause sometimes it'd just be too hard. Sometimes I'd have to explain things that I just don't know how to explain. Sometimes there's things that you have to figure out by living long enough.'
Alvin was mad and he knew his face showed it.
'Don't you be so mad at me, little brother. I can't tell you some things because I just don't know myself, and that's not lying. But you can count on this. If I can tell you, I will, and if I can't, I'll say so, and won't pretend.'
That was the most fair thing a grown-up had ever said, and it made Alvin's eyes fill up. 'You keep that promise, Measure.'
'I'll keep it or die, you can count on that.'
'I won't forget, you know,' Alvin remembered the vow he made to the Shining Man last night. 'I know how to keep a promise, too.'
Measure laughed and pulled Alvin to him, hugged him right against his shoulder. 'You're as bad as Mama,' he said. 'You just don't let up.'
'I can't help it,' said Alvin. 'If I start believing you, then how'll I know when to stop?'
'Never stop,' said Measure."
