I began rapping when I was 10 years old, writing small stories and verses for self-entertainment. I began to create full songs at the age of 12. I grew up amongst the deadly street gangs of Los Angeles, moving from hood 2 hood, project to project. Life isn't easy for a young black kid dreaming of becoming a musician, from the guns to the drugs to the murda cases, life was never stable. I associate myself solely with ENTITY, A.I.P., L.I.E., and X SQUAD music groups. Watch out for the wave of ENTITY 2010! With a completely new and innovative sound, both AiP and LiE (Under the unbrella ENTITY) incorporate beautifully melodic vocals as well as one-of-a-kind rap styles and lyrics that create an unbelievably perfect ensemble of music and emotion. A modern day hip-hop version of Shakespeare’s tales, this film explores the lives of five South Central Los Angeles teenagers attending Crenshaw High School. The students’ personal stories subtly parallel Shakespeare’s archetypal characters: Myles - an attractive, intelligent and talented student taking his journey to leadership in the way of Henry the Fifth. Adam - an intelligent and basketball leader, is a “fish out of water”. He’s the only white student attending Crenshaw High School. This coming-of-age journey reveals Adam’s struggle in maintaining his identity. Also, like Henry the Fifth. Joanna (Hamlet) - a beautiful 17-year-old foster child trying to deal with the horror of rape, incest and imprisonment. Emmanuel and Estephany (Romeo and Juliet) - their families extremely dislike each other but the teenage couple continues to believe that their love will prevail. RAPPING WITH SHAKESPEARE also examines how a popular English teacher, Andy Molnar uses the students’ popular culture, hip-hop/rap to access Shakespeare… He teaches how the lyrics are put together poetically and how it involves urban themes to form cultural and social identities - themes that inspire and provide a bridge for students to learn classical literature. The film also features music by Sony/BMG artist Vanessa Mae, the world-renowned choir leader and music teacher Dr. Iris Stevenson (the feature film Sister Act II was inspired by Dr. Stevenson), the retiring principal Dr. Issac Hammond, Asst. Principal Naazir “the keeper of the gate” and Los Angeles Police Officer Richard Bryant, one of the two resident school’s police officers. “The band of brothers and sisters” who keep the students safe. RAPPING WITH SHAKESPEARE is a colorful, compelling and dramatic tale of the young people of Crenshaw High School as they struggle to achieve their dreams while coping with the universal teenage problems of violence, sexual relationships, insecurity, loneliness and embattled, mercurial identity. The film opens with the narration of the ghost-like muse (Myles Thompson) who narrates the documentary three-act structure, which encourages the audience to unleash its imagination. The visual style merges the acts of showing and telling, from the teacher Andy Molnar’s Shakespearean and hip-hop/rap lecturers inter-cut with the dramatic interviews and stories of the students’ life. The film, filled with music, overflows at each corner of its loosely unfolding narrative, with inspired music that seems to burst forth spontaneously out of sheer irrepressible emotion. ! ! !
