BoldasLIVE launches with The Sunday Sessions. Think "Inside the Actors Studio" meets "MTV Unplugged." Each Sunday afternoon event takes a Black musical artist who's defying categories and ignoring boundaries, and pairs them with a music journalist or cultural critic for a live, unedited interview. A short performance follows, after which the interviewer returns for more discussion and Q&A with the audience.September 16 Video Recap: The Family Stand performs "In the Name of What"The Family StandCultural critic and Black Rock Coalition Co-Founder Greg Tate had this to say about The Family Stand:They did what Great Black Music performances used to do on the regular--make you think hard about the world and your own inner life while you had a stomp down, sweaty, good time in the process. Built around the songwriting and production talents of Smith and Lord and the thermonuclear vocals of St. Victor, The Family Stand recombinated elements of rock, folk, soul, free jazz, hiphop, funk and hardcore gospel into a melodic amalgam that's answered the musical question, What if Stevie Wonder ever sat in with Living Colour, Fishbone and Bad Brains?Event photos--September 16--The Family Stand interviewed by Michaela angela DavisJULY 22 VIDEO RECAP: Nona Hendryx on her early musical influencesLaunch photos--7/22/07 with Nona Hendryx interviewed by Nick CharlesJULY 22 VIDEO RECAP: Nona performs "Transformation"JULY 22 VIDEO RECAP: Nona's early involvement with the BRC and two sides to the cultural appropriation question* * *More video on the BoldasLIVE Channel on YouTube CLICK HERE
* * *PLEASE NOTE--The October 14 show with Danielia Cotton will be rescheduled in 2008!* * *
Danielia Cotton’s music is not . . . relaxed, mellow, sweet, or similar to anything else that’s out there.Danielia sings soulful new Rock & Roll...sometimes dark, usually fiery, always compelling. She has spent the last 18 months touring behind her debut album, Small White Town. Her live show spotlights her shockingly rich and raw vocal chops and anthemic songwriting.Here’s what the press is saying about her:
Relix Magazine listed her as one of “5 Artists You Should Know†in January, 2007.
ESSENCE magazine writes: “She sings with raw intensity, ranging from beautifully tender to howling, not even caring if her powerful voice cracks…this Jersey girl who names Led Zeppelin and Tina Turner as influences
confirms that rock is Black Music too.â€
Time Out NY calls her “A soulful young rocker, who packs a soulful voice and a searing telecaster….â€And the
Rochester (NY) City Weekly reported the following: “Switching between acoustic guitar and singing with Joe Cocker-with-a-feminine-twist moves, Cotton belted, bellowed, shouted, and sang. Her songs combined a singer-songwriter tone with rock passion and determination, all of it seasoned with anger and joy. Her voice soared the East Avenue sky, breaking just when the lyrics sounded as if they couldn't take it anymore. She was mesmerizing. People were knocked out.â€
