About Me

"This intense, marvelously plotted, paced and characterized story will immediately garner comparisons to Lord of the Flies, or even the long-playing world shifts of Stephen King . . ." -- Booklist (Starred Review)
Mostly I write. Type type type. With two fingers. I sit on my porch drinking coffee and smoking a cigar and type type type. Sometimes I go to a coffee shop and type type type. Occasionally when I get really excited about what I'm writing I can engage a third finger.
Hmmm. That's boring, isn't it? So. Okay. I'm sitting on my porch type type typing when a car pulls onto my street. I don't recognize the car and the driver is in shadow, but something about the tilt of his head, his silhouette . . . I'm over the railing, spilling coffee and MacBook before he can squeeze the trigger. I hit the dirt as the bullet hits the railing. But that was my one trick used up. Now I'm flat on my back with no cover but a shrub and he has plenty of bullets, a clear sightline and nothing but time.
I've published 150 kid books under 11 different names. These include (with my lovely wife, K.A. Applegate,) the ANIMORPHS series, EVERWORLD, BOYFRIENDS/GIRLFRIENDS, and even, early on, back in the so-poor-we'd-write-anything days, SWEET VALLEY TWINS. My career runs from Jessica Wakefield's first period, to crazy fights between Bengal tigers and razor-covered aliens.
I retired from writing for a couple years, did some other things, including producing documentaries. Now I'm back writing. (insert shameless plug here) I have a six book series called GONE, the first book of which just came out.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Readers. Fans -- always assuming there are some. Other kidlit writers. Book people. Movie people -- writers and producers. TV people. Chefs. Political junkies. Reporters. Just generally interesting people.

Killing A Character

So I heard from Stern Editor today. He thinks GONE 2 looks good. Needs some tweaks on the ending. As usual, I agreed with him. Not because he's the boss of me, he isn't exactly, but because he's rig...

Suggestions?

So today I'm still on rewrites for Gone 2. And my biggest issue right now is that I am sick of all my music. I have no system for finding new music. I don't listen to the radio, I have no friends, ...

Did I Mention It’s Hot?

Okay, so I haven't blogged much lately. I was going along fine there and then kind of just . . . stopped. What's new? Well, GONE came out. It got some good reviews. In fact it got two starred reviews...

Burnout

I sent the manuscript for GONE 2: Hunger. I'm already thinking of the things I should have done but didn't -- I never really explained Mary's pathology -- and the things I did but probably shouldn't ...

Advanced Reader Copy

So, I got the ARC, (Advanced Reader Copy) for GONE 1. First time, interestingly. Back in the paperback series days no one bothered. We were never more than six months out from publication, so no ti...

Yes, That Stephen King.

I'm told that GONE 1 is being sent to Stephen King to see whether he might give us a blurb. Stephen King. Yes, that Stephen King. I think I'm a pretty good writer. He's better. I'm a pretty fast ...

Done. Kind Of.

I'm done with the first draft of GONE 2. 680 manuscript pages. It took about 6 1/2 months. A little less, since I took a month and a half off in the middle. I think it's in good shape. There's no...

Words and Music

When I'm writing connective tissue, or doing time checks, or "backwriting," I find it boring, but I have to pay attention, so no music. When I'm doing rewrites I have to "listen," to the words so, a...

Kidlit My Way.

It looks as if GONE is going to push some boundaries, as they say. It's going to creep some kids out. And it may creep parents out even more. Every adult who has read the book so far -- editors for...

I Like Not Knowing.

Page 350 or so and I finally figured out how I'm going to play GONE - 2. More than halfway through the book. This is actually early for me.I wonder sometimes how much I should be writing about the p...
