About Me

Provocative. Controversial. Alluring. Fascinating. Some of the many words one can use to describe the enigmatic T.A.Z. He is at times (at least to me) a darker and more animated version of a young Jay-Z, a comparison that is discernable (and one he doesn't like). But this is no mere facsimile, he does quite enough to distinguish himself in this regard due to his astounding versatility. Raised by a hellraising party animal of a mother- he was a product of the streets at 10 and no longer a virgin at 12. A child prodigy, he had successful runs in broadway themed plays starring as "The Scarecrow" in "The Wizard of OZ" and as Pinocchio in "Pinocchio", showcasing a high tenor voice. Was the lead singer of a boys group named "Fresh Force", patterned after New Edition. But the lure of the streets proved to be too much and he would abandon music entirely. Hot-tempered and fiercely independant, he was moved to Las Vegas where he found solace among "Crip" gang members. Was able to somehow find a way to become an honor student and outstanding athlete on the football field.**** Upon arriving back in Jersey he became an award winning essayist and New Jersey State Youth Ambassador, where he would travel to places such as Montreal, Canada; London, England; and Moscow, Russia for youth peace summits as a representative of the United States.**** Was a 2-time New Jersey State Champion Debater, Student Council President and Florida State University bound (until the death of his Aunt Ruth and killing of high school sweetheart, Jadana- events which occurred within weeks of each other). He enlisted in the Marine Corps, but was released due to misconduct (he declined comment about this)****But it's his singing voice, a voice so unique and presented with remarkable ease (Michael Jackson does come to mind, he sang for me right on the spot) that adds an element of intrigue to an artist that this writer has never seen. He is a powerful lyricist, with a plethora of styles- and moods. I found him to be charming, arrogant, extremely articulate and kind. Somehow you just cant help but like him. But you can tell that he walks with an egde, as if something haunts him. He seemed to me a pilot light that doesn't need to be anywhere near gas. Which is really interesting when you consider he can go from being a teenager to a middle-aged man in the span of minutes. I gathered all of this about him in a little over an hour. Super-talented, brash and full of ambition- get ready for an adrenaline rush.****Samantha Levine/Freelance Journalist

Influences: my mom and late 70's soul. i was a big fan of michael jackson, his influence on pop culture can still be seen today. prince was phenomenal and i loved aaliyah. she was ahead of her time. run-dmc was groundbreaking and i remember admiring ll cool j, big daddy kane, and rakim. i always will appreciate the power of tupac shakur, the smooth precision of notorious big and the intelligence of nas. t.i., whom i have tremendous respect for, seems to embody all of those qualities at times. but my personal favorite rapper of all-time is jay-z.

Sounds Like: i get jay-z a lot. it's a difficult and uncomfortable comparison for me, but i've grown to understand that it's one i'll have to live with. maybe as i continue to evolve that'll go away. i dont try to sound like him- trained ears would know. i'm a natural singer since childhood, and was never classically trained. my voice is so unique i don't know who i would compare it to :) but if u combine the elements of my ability to sing and rap, i don't know if i really compare to anyone.
