Edward H. Kane, 99, formerly of 45 Trahan Ave., Worcester, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 surrounded by his family at the Auburn Life Care Center.His wife of 67 years, Marion C. (Wood) Kane, died in 1996. He leaves five children, Edward H. Kane, Jr. and his wife June A. of Rutland, Maureen E. Pottle and her husband James R. of Cape Coral, Fla., Lois A. Grosse and her husband Robert L. of Worcester, Jeffrey W. Kane of West Palm Beach, Fla., and James B. Kane and his wife Ila Mae of Worcester; 23 grandchildren, including Lori Slack of Rutland with whom he lived; 42 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by a son Lee F. Kane, a grandson Matthew Kane, and his five siblings, James Kane, Hazel Saksa, Mary Sjogren, Gertrude Lavin and Anna McCausland.Ed was born in Worcester, son of Matthew and Mary (Simpson) Kane and has lived in Rutland since 1999.He graduated from North High School in 1927 and attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was a terrific athlete. He was captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams at North High School and was a captain at Catholic University, where he received an athletic scholarship. He was named to several All-City teams. He later played semi-pro baseball and basketball. He refereed high school and college basketball games for many years. He also refereed several Harlem Globetrotters games in Worcester.Ed was a firefighter for the City of Worcester for 33 years. He retired in 1973 as a Lieutenant assigned to the Grove St. Headquarters Station. He was thought to be the oldest retired firefighter in the United States.He was a member of St. Stephen's Church. He was a lifetime member of the Brown Square Civic Club and the Knights of Columbus.Calling hours at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, are Thursday, Feb. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be Friday, Feb. 8 from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen's Church, 357 Grafton St., Worcester.
