***UNOFFICIAL DANIEL GARNER MYSPACE***
A tribute to one of the coolest video-game characters, Daniel Garner, hero of the game "PainKiller".
MEET DANIEL GARNER
I died as Daniel Garner. I was sentenced to serve in pain somewhere between Heaven and Hell. I lost my faith but gained a new name. Now I am the angel's only prayer.
ABOUT DANIEL
I don't want to boast about it, but truth is I am one of the most fascinating video-game heroes ever. I am fearless, I am cool, I like wearing leather and I love my stakegun and my painkiller-gun. With those two I feel immune, although I am not so much in reality (just hope the demons didn't hear that). So far have been the protagonist of three kick-ass adventures: "Heaven's Got A Hitman", "Battle Out Of Hell" and "Hell Wars" (X-Box exclusive edition).
It all began with a severe car accident, where both me and my beloved wife, Catherine, died. Soon after this, I found out that I was trapped between Heaven and Hell fighting demons, trying to gain access to Heaven and finally meet my wife so that I could be with her forever. The reasons why she went straight to Heaven while I had to pass through all this to get there, remain unknown, and whoever I asked about it, told me that the answer is somewhere in my past. Quite a diplomatic answer for such a straightforward question!
After many years, I was summoned by a strange creature, Sammael (a tall and imposing figure, looking like a blond goth angel), who introduced himself to me as a representative from Heaven (more like a metal band member, if you ask me) and informed me, as if it was the most natural thing in the world, that I had been chosen so as to face Lucifer's fierce army and get rid of hordes of lost souls.
As you can understand, I had no other choice than to accept the orders, and so I set off on my oh-so-fascinating mission. Armed with courage, power, anger and a good deal of ammo, I started exploring several places where the familiar met the extraordinaire on every corner, and there was heavy action on every single step. Hordes of demons and zombies attacked me but what a cool hero I would be if I didn't manage to survive all the battles - though not scratchless.
I was not alone in this journey of horror, as I soon found out. A strange girl, named Eve, appeared out of nowhere and informed me that she was going to be my guide.
Eve was very weird but she seemed to be a nice and helpful person, so I trusted her and she indeed proved to be a valuable ally. After an encounter with an aquaintance from the past - a demon I had met during another adventure (maybe I'll tell you about it some other time) - I found out her true identity. This revelation left me in awe, and made me start wondering about her presence in such a place.
At the end of "Heaven's Got A Hitman", I came face to face with Lucifer in Hell, a frightening yet amazing environment where everything was still and quiet. I bravely fought against him and won, and everything became clean and clear again.
However I was not done yet; I had to find a way to get out of Hell. In "Battle Out Of Hell", I had to go through a series of several encounters with demons and face Alastor, the fiercest general of Lucifer. It's after this that I finally found out which exactly Eve's role in the whole story actually was.
ABOUT THE GAME
Adrenaline-high action, beautiful ambience, terrifying enemies, tough boss fights, interactive environments and hard-to-find secrets are only a few of the elements that can describe the game of which I am the proud protagonist.
All the levels start with me entering a suspiciously quiet and sometimes serene-looking place, but soon action bursts in accompanied by fast-paced heavy metal music. Me being a metalhead, you can understand that I'm having the time of my life when this happens. Demons attack in hordes and I have to resort to all sorts of skills so as to trick them and erradicate them. Demons who die, leave their souls behind and the latters stay for a short while, so I can run and grab them and this way restore my health. Everytime that I collect 66 souls, I morph into a demon for a brief period of time, and during that time I have a distorted view of the surroundings and am able to kill with a look. As you may suspect, this morphing, apart from being particularly cool, is very useful at certain points, so it's better to watch how the fight goes and try to be ready to morph into a demon at just the right time.
As soon as the area is cleared out, silence and peace return and then I can wander around the rooms, look for secrets, admire the settings and get me prepared for the next fight.
Daydream mode is mainly for freshmen or those who don't care about having a challenging gameplay and just want to pass their time with a bit of fun. Enemies fall down pretty easily here and I lose minor health with every attack I receive. Daydream is perfect if you play the game for the first time, but if you are an experienced player, you may find it a bit boring at times. Personally, I am not having a good time when you make me wander around in Daydream. I tell you so that you know.
Insomnia mode offers some quite challenging gameplay moments without it being too tough; if you are a veteran player, you won't feel bored with it, and if you are a freshman you won't have particular problems (although at times even this mode may become a pain in the neck). However, if you are looking for some really good and tough action, the higher difficulty levels are probably the best for you.
Nightmare mode is where the really serious gaming begings. The word 'easy' is unknown here and my enemies are able to kill me at the blinking of an eye. This mode doesn't require only quickness and alertness from the players, but also strategic skills. Most of the luxuries that are offered in the previous modes (ie, health restored at every savepoint) do not exist here, so it's just me against the demons.
Trauma mode is for just a few players. If you are not at least veteran do not attempt to play in this mode. Not only my health doesn't get restored at checkpoints, but moreover the demons that I kill don't leave their souls behind so I can't replenish it in any way. Playing my game in Trauma, is like playing a completely different game. Don't say I didn't warn you!
The secrets are several well-hidden golden artifacts that I have to collect. Many times I can see the tantalizing shine quite clearly but getting to it is far from being easy. In certain occasions, I have to use whatever the particularly interactive environment offers so as to create a path to the secret. Finding all secrets in some levels rewards me with a Black Tarot card.
Black Tarot cards are several cards that I can collect in each level after accomplishing a certain task (ie, after killing all monsters or after collecting all souls or after findning all the gold or after finding all the secrets; each level requires a different task so as to unlock a card for you). With them, I can do many things that will make my life easier while dealing with the demons (and believe me, I need it!). For example, I can drag souls from a distance or take only half damage or morph into a demon with every 50 souls I collect, etc. As these cards are so valuable, aquiring them is not always easy.
THE ENVIRONMENTS
I 'travel' to several areas where, according to the information I have in hand and that Eve gives me, the armies of Lucifer reside. Several of these areas are quite familiar, yet in this version here what dominates is an eery, creepy feeling. City on Water, for example, looks like an extraordinaire version of Venice.
The settings are gorgeous and we have all the time to admire them once I am done with the battles. So don't start gazing around when I get attacked from all directions; be patient until all the demons are dead, and then we can play tourists. The environments are vast and the degree of exploration in them is particularly high. So make sure you have examined everything before we leave a room.
Although the game in general is particularly creepy, there are several humoristic details that lighten up the atmosphere once you notice them. For example, in one of the levels there are some zombie bikers from Hell who feature a rather tender message on their jackets. In another level, some drunken demons throw up on me (yuck!) and somewhere else you can spot a poster featuring the sign of Umbrella corporation from Resident Evil. But my favourite has to be the tagline that the guys who made my game put somewhere in the booklet: "No demons were harmed during the creation of PainKiller." After this, even I started to see all those frightening creatures with a different eye!
THE ENEMIES
I encounter a great variety of demons as I go, and this way I never feel bored. Some of them are quite stupid, so getting rid of them is a piece of cake, but others are either too smart or too strong, so I need a lot of skill (and luck!) so as to get them out of my way. There are certain demons who are so ugly that they scare the heck out of me; while others are quite decent-looking (relatively speaking of course!) yet equally deadly.
