Being an Assyrian Girl
Being an Assyrian girl, I frequently have men in the family that think they're the ones in charge and they can do anything they want. It’s true, they can do what they please, but they aren’t in charge, at least in my house they aren’t. Old fashion Assyrian men, and sadly sometimes the women, believe that women are to serve food, clean, not have any goals or accomplishments in life, not have a say in an argument, etc. Men are supposed to be in charge of the household and make the decisions. It’s the man’s laws and the man’s rules. Am I supposed to obey these “rules” that have been going on for generations? No way! My mother and I constantly remind my brother and father that we are not slaves and won’t do anything for them. Men have legs, arms, and eyes just as women do, so they can get up on their two feet and do the things they want while women need to have lives on their own.When other Assyrian men hear that me and my mother are like this, they think we’re crazy. These “rules” aren’t written anywhere for us to abide by, and even if they were we still wouldn‘t “obey“ them. There is no way I am going to do what other Assyrian women and girls are doing because we “have to” or because it has been that way for so long. Assyrian women that are not from the U.S. don’t speak on what they think is right because they are afraid to. Why are they afraid? Because they make no money of their own, they don’t know any better, and the man of the house can kick them out anytime they “get out of line.” I was over my Assyrian’s friends house and the father says, “you women are supposed to clean anyway!” For example, let’s say an Assyrian mother has a husband, a daughter, and two sons; when it’s time to clean or organize, she only calls the daughter to help because she believes that men aren’t supposed to do anything. The women need to realize that they have lives of their own and they shouldn’t teach their daughters to be like them. This isn’t only with Assyrian’s either. People can think what they want, but I’m going to do what I believe I should, and that’s have my own life. People need to use minds of their own and not follow the crowd. I hope that as time progresses, things will change.

I never require anyone to accompany me and I never need a shoulder to cry on. I do not feel that most of the people around me would even understand, connect, or be concerned about how I felt. This does not mean I can not successfully interact with others because there are some people I enjoy being with. I am a very helpful person towards anyone and I enjoy being around others. It is said that a man can usually change a woman’s ambition in life; that will certainly never happen to me. My family may not be the greatest family around, but they are who shaped me. Without my family, I do not know what kind of individual I would become. I believe that everything happens for a reason and when things seem unpleasant, it will soon become beneficial.I have learned to think for myself, be mentally strong, and independent. The outrageous thing is, my parents never had restrictions for me. They never told me not to consume alcohol, not to smoke or do any drugs, not to have sex, not to involve myself in gangs, not to skip school, and so on. It was not that they did not care, my parents just gave me my own space and own air to breathe. Throughout my high school years, I have never missed a day of school, nor have I ditched or cut any class. In the sports I attend, I never quit and I am very dedicated. I am thankful my parents gave me my own space, whether they were destined to or not, to think for myself and act on what I thought was right. If my parents ever forbad me from doing something, I would feel anger and curiosity. I would not want to listen to them and would intend on doing things on my own; that was not the situation though.What I love to do most when I am alone is sing my heart out. I was endowed with a singing voice from my father so I have an excellent range and I can entertain myself. I started taking private voice lessons in January of 2007 in downtown Chicago and learned numerous skills and techniques. I mainly took the class because I wanted to develop self-confidence and learn how to use my voice in a healthy manner. Singing is delightful to me and it gets my mind off my troubles. I can always satisfy myself in doing the things that I love. This musical journey of mine will continue throughout my life.
