A retrospective look at the 1999-2000 Philadelphia Flyers season. The '00 Flyers were a team beset by tragedy and misfortune, but they managed to rise above it all and come within a game (a goal, even) of going to the Stanley Cup finals. Before the season began, their promising young sophmore defenseman, Dimitri Tertishny, was killed in a boating accident at a Flyers camp, the long-time voice of the Flyers, Gene Hart, passed away (and his daughter, Lauren, their anthem singer, was diagnosed with cancer), head coach Roger Neilson was also diagnosed with cancer (which claimed him 3 short years later), and wasn't able to reclaim his job after he returned from his chemotherapy. Star player Eric Lindros suffered through a number of concussions only to struggle back for game six and seven of the eastern conference finals, when Scott Stevens of the Devils blindsided him with one of the most dramatic open-ice hits ever and ended his Flyers career. A rookie goalie, Brian Boucher, managed to supplant John Vanbiesbrouck as the starter just before the playoffs began, and long-time vet and assistant captain Rod Brind'Amour was traded away to the shock of all in mid-season (for eventual captain Keith Primeau, who scored one of the greatest goals in Flyers history in a wild 6-OT game in Pittsburgh to turn that series around and lead the Flyers to the conference finals). All in all it was a season that never should have seen the team do as well as it did, but gave its fans one of the best rides in the process. This video was one of the first sports videos I cut, merely as a side project, though it led to much of my work being featuring in-game for the team.
