Success is about talent. Its about hard work, but most of all its about timing.I came up with the line 'If I can be Giant for just one moment' a couple of years ago inspired by the film of the same name with James Dean. I had the melody running around my head for ages but didn't know where to take it.
A few months later I bumped into an old friend of mine. Steve Sharples. I knew Steve from Fortress Studios where we had spent a lot of time hanging out in each other studios but had never got around to working together. Steve had previously composed music to the film "Moulin Rouge." I played him the idea and he instantly knew what to do. "We should make this big, like a film soundtrack. Over the next few days we worked on it until we had a pretty impressive instrumental, but we needed to find a vocalist and a songwriter who would have enough presence and vision to carry it.
We were still trying to figure out where we were going to find that person when I got a phone call from Arianne Schreiber. I had written with Arianne previously and had been blown away by her songwriting and lyrical skills. She was living in Australia, but had just arrived in London that morning. I told her about the track we were working on and we played it down the phone. An hour later she turned up at the studio. Two hours later she had the lyrics down and the vocals recorded. That original vocal is what is on the record today.
Realising we had something very special we decided to see what else we could come with and so over the next few months we would send tracks to Arianne in Australia via the Internet and she would send back the vocals.
By the end of the year we decided we needed to start promoting ourselves. We had heard about Myspace and thought 'hey if it works for Lily Allen, maybe it can work for us.' We came up with the name iCON, (it just made sense), set up a myspace page and took out an ad. Very quickly people started coming to the site.
At that same time, legendary songwriter and producer Mike Chapman was searching the internet, looking for inspiration, a reason to stay dedicated to the rock n roll business, looking for anyone out there who got it. He came across the site, saw Ariannes very unique style, heard the music and thought "WOW, this is what I'm looking for. "
A couple of phone calls later and we were flying to NY to Mike's studio.
Mike Chapman says " The great thing about ICON is we each bring a very different set of skills, experience and influences. We all do what we do well. We realise that is all about great songs, we embrace technology and collectively we are an unstoppable force. We are here to reclaim pop music. The Beatles, Blondie, even the Sex Pistols, were all 'Pop Music' of the day. Sadly In 2009 pop music is regarded in a different light but we are here to do our part to help change all that"
I was driving to the studio today and saw a poster advertising an album by some artist I forget. It read 'Pop music is about to go bang' All i can say is 'We are iCON! get ready for a fucking explosion.
