About Me

NTHABI: THE STORY SO FAR:In High school people that knew me also knew about my love for Hip-hop. Hip Hop found me at an early age, but as a fan, little did I know that I would be amongst one of the most recognizable voices and faces in for South African women in Hip Hop even before releasing an album. At age 15, I was bumping my head to the sounds of Da Brat, Kriss-Kross and The Fugees and was slowly being converted into an emcee. I started out as the only girl freestyling in cyphers with no intention of taking it any further. Little did I know, I was laying the foundations of becoming a writer. A friend of mine introduced me to Helio (a producer who had worked with legendary South African hip-hop record label, Outrageous Records). Helio put me in studio in mid 2004 and it was then that I decided that this hobby of mine could actually turn in to a fully-fledged career. I recorded a host of tracks, which included "Reality Check", "That Chic" & "Club People", which were subsequently featured on the Hype Sessions compilations (a CD that accompanies the only hip-hop magazine in the country). My track "That chic" was on the Metro fm’s Hip Hop show, Rhyme n’ Reason local top 10, for over 2 months which helped me grow beyond Gauteng.I've featured on various other mixtapes and managed not only to make a name for myself within the streets, but also within the industry. These include: -Beats Against The Beasts vol. 1 -Exclusive 16s (Spaceman's mixtape) -Perigo Minus Vol. 2 (Landmynz Mixtape)While I was working with Helio, I was introduced to Outrageous records, where I met artists like BattleKat, Optical Illusion, Zubz & ProVerb. This interaction gave me a new look at Hip Hop, which forced me to re-apply myself to my art and improved my writing skills. I keep myself on my toes by constantly pushing myself to the limit.Currently, I'm part of a documentary called "Counting Headz, which is about African women in Hip Hop. It has already been nominated for several awards around the world (see www.myspace.com/countingheadz). The Documentary was show cased on women’s day(9th August 2006) by the Imbokodo collective. Other international works include features on a movie title “Maybe God is Ill” which is set to release during 2007. My song “Home” was used as one of the soundtracks of the movie. I'm also in a project with the British Council called Power In the Voice that works with kids from various schools to help them improve on their various art forms.I recently completed my Finland tour (alongside Dj Hamma and Reason). It included visits to youth camps, press conferences about the state of the nation and what we as artists can do to improve on it as well as non-stop interviews & performances...HECTIC, but mind blowing as well. What separates me from your average emcee? Well....I don’t let gender or irrelevant criticism stand in the way of my success. “I don’t want people to judge me based on gender, but rather on a level of skill”. Hate it or love it...this is who I am. NOT YOUR AVERAGE CHIC!

George Carlin

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have big...
