Hailing from Hobart - Australia's southern-most capital city, mdusu&dameza (pronounced muh-doo-soo and daym-zah) are Tasmania's premier MC/DJ combo. Having formed in 2003, MC/producer mdusu & DJ Dameza have become stalwarts of the Tasmanian live music scene, and have built themselves a reputation Australia-wide for quality recordings and raucous live shows, a feat which is all the more remarkable considering the isolation of their home town. In just a few short years, the duo have performed alongside acts such as Jurassic 5, Z-Trip, Mixmaster Mike, The Herd, Funkoars, Muph & Plutonic etc. - mdusu can even lay claim to having shared a stage with Wolfmother (before the Grammy). The duo has also been a regular part of the Obese Block Party since 2007, with mdusu hosting every Hobart leg since inception, and Dameza acting as “house†DJ for every night.
As an MC, mdusu earned his stripes through the freestyle & battle scenes, winning countless MC battles across Tasmania, and performing solidly in battles across Melbourne. His lyrical skill has gained him respect amongst the leaders of the Australian hip hop scene, and has led to collaborations with many artists, the most notable being his work with Astronomy Class' Chasm & Ozi Batla, and Yorkshire, UK MC Disorderly (Figgaz of Speech crew). mdusu is also an accomplished producer, having laced beats for almost every MC in Tasmania during his 10 plus-years as a beatmaker. A skilled multi-instrumentalist, mdusu has spent more than half his life playing various instruments in live ensembles, and has toured Australia & around the Pacific Islands as far as Hawaii, playing many different styles of music. In 2007, he produced two tracks for The Tongue's debut, Shock & Awe, and supplied a verse to super-producer Chasm for his 2008 smash debut LP, Beyond the Beat Tape. mdusu will also be behind the boards as sole producer for at least 4 more releases over the next 12 months.
Dameza started his musical career as a bass guitarist in metal bands, switching to turntables in 2003. DJing came easily to him, and in no time at all, Dameza was holding down regular residencies in clubs across Hobart. As well as being a superior party DJ, he is also a top-notch "MC set" DJ (who's even been known to jump on the mic from time to time), and is fast becoming known as one of Australia's best trick set DJs. In 2006, Dameza entered the Australian section of the World DMC DJ Championships for the first time, walking out with equal 4th place and the instant respect of Australia's top DJs. Not a week goes by in Tasmania without Dameza rocking a party on the decks, and his skills are so in demand that other Tasmanian MCs constantly request his services for their live shows.
In 2004, mdusu&dameza teamed up with one of Tasmanian hip hop's most important players, DJ Grotesque, to form Tasmania's first independent hip hop label, Support Local Underground Talent Productions. Originally an events promoter, in 2006 S.L.U.T Productions moved into producing original music with the release of mdusu&dameza's first album, sounds from our town. The album was a resounding success for an artist & label debut, and raised the bar for Tasmanian hip hop. In May 2008, the bar was raised again with the release of their groundbreaking sophomore LP, can we get a soul clap? On May 10th (distributed by Obese Records). The album has already been picked up by Triple j, and has helped mdusu&dameza become one of Triple j's Next Crop artists for 2008, an honour which is only bestowed upon 30 artists of all genres across Australia. The album was also made the Triple j Hip Hop Show “Album of the Week†(June 9th-15th).
Throughout August/September, mdusu&dameza took their sound across the country, with a national tour comprising of packed shows in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania & South Australia. Following the success of this tour, the duo has already begun work on their third album, which is set for release in mid-2009. Dameza is also working on the debut mixtape from S.L.U.T Productions artist Dunn D, and mdusu is putting together his debut solo producer album, which even in its embryonic stages features some Australia’s best MCs, singers & DJs.
