About Me

- Ted Luff - Acoustic Comedian / Folk Poet - Biography

Ted Luff was born in Essex in the 1930s. He was educated at Clacton County High School and then served an engineering apprenticeship at Stratford Locomotive Works.
After National Service with the Royal Engineers he went back to the railways but, with steam locomotives becoming obsolete, he transferred to the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway in Cumberland.
Subsequent jobs were in the machine-tool and gas industries then the Science Museum at South Kensington.
He rejoined the railways in 1974 as a signalman and rose through the grades ending his career at Kings Cross in London.
He started writing in the late seventies, first jokes then poetry.
He took early retirement in 1995 and started learning to play acoustic guitar the following year.
Since then he has written over 400 songs, drawing on his personal experiences for some of his material, as well as observations and social commentary.
Until recently he was a reluctant performer, but can now be heard in the pubs and folk clubs both in Colchester, where he lives, as well as a few selected venues in London. He's also played at a folk festival in Scotland.
He learnt to write Braille so he could communicate better with a blind friend and then devised a method of depicting guitar chord diagrams using Braille cells which she found helpful.
