INTRODUCTION TO EXTREME NUNCHAKU

Welcome to the official Extreme Nunchaku (EXN) website. This domain has been raised as an informational platform for mature Nunchaku stylists and well-intentioned beginners. Whether or not you are a Nunchaku practitioner with legitimate qualifications or a self-proclaimed Nunchaku ‘Veteran’, ‘Expert’ or ‘Master’, I respectively request, upon investigation of the EXN subject that the reader first carefully review the EXN disclaimer . My name is Damien Romero sometimes known as ‘The Freestylist’. Influenced by both Chinese and Filipino motion theory, the distinct ‘Signature’ of EXN evolved almost entirely outside the scope of traditional Martial Arts. With no particular emphasis on combative tactics beginners of EXN initially learn Core Alignment directives and strict Conditioning exercises that are at the foundation of EXN theory and interpretation. The result is what I believe to be structurally, the fastest and most technically proficient Nunchaku style in the world today.

Pure Extreme Nunchaku is predominantly a performance art; it is an unusually detailed and (at times) perilous method featuring a unique and exceptionally fluid Spatial Geometry . This compelling and influential style has piqued the interest of most Nunchaku enthusiasts I’ve had the pleasure to train with over the years. For several reasons however, the EXN method is not for everyone.

As an ‘Extreme Sport’ there is no obtainable belt or rank indicating proficiency in the ‘Art’ of EXN.

The EXN standard for an instrument’s weight and measure is a formidable and unpopular tapered ‘old school’ design weighing in at nearly a pound.

Intensely progressive, EXN techniques are generally not accepted by, or compatible with traditional Nunchaku disciplines.

EXN is not unnecessarily preoccupied with the avid pursuit of Urban Combat.

The training applications for Obstacles and Uneven Terrain require exceptional Balance and Spatial Acuity; these daring techniques are performed with significantly greater risk to the practitioner.

EXN promises to challenge and confound even the most seasoned Nunchaku veterans.

EXN is devoted to the development of exceptional hand-eye skills and coordination.

Categorically speaking, with more opportunity for innovation, my particular area of expertise resides primarily in the Freestyle Performance Mode of Nunchaku and is not the only measure for Nunchaku proficiency. The Nunchaku is a remarkably tactile and versatile instrument with many different competitive applications such as, Endurance, Breaking, Targeting, Traditional Kata, Synchronized Team Demonstrations, Musical Kata and Kumite.

One of the most visually distinct characteristics of EXN is a class of unorthodox Tagging and Redirecting skills called Advanced Fusion Techniques or ‘AFT’ . This AFT Punctuation is what gives the EXN ‘Signature’ its ½ beat ¼ beat , alliterative qualities.

Another distinctive reference for EXN are the specifications for the Dual Nunchaku Signature which focuses primarily on asymmetrical skills in Alignment, Timing, Rhythm, Rotation and Technique , exhibiting very little Symmetry overall when compared to most other styles.

EXN also prides itself on the skillful resolve of the Lateral and Rotational Bias , the key to improved asymmetrical displays and a more textured 'Signature' . In addition to the classical Nunchaku imperatives associated with Speed and Power, there are more subtle areas of technique development that I find equally important, some of which include Tension, Sensitivity, Fluidity, Spatial Acuity , and Modulation of Speed , then finally the ultimate (and not so subtle) challenge, Uneven Terrain . This is the section where all EXN skills and abilities collectively come into play with special emphasis on Mobility, Precision Balance and Footwork .

I realize that this website text hardly substantiates the descriptive claims I have made of Extreme Nunchaku. Understandably, some skeptics will not be satisfied until they have seen these techniques for themselves. To be released in early 2004, a new demonstration video is currently in production and will be made available for purchase only through my friends at www.valleymartialarts.com
