When asked about the inspiration behind the song Chris Mason (Here On The Battlefield), Joe Monto said "I was lying in bed one night reflecting in the quiet of my home when a thought came to my mind. Here is my family, safely sound asleep and on the other side of the world, there are fierce battles taking place by our men and women in our American Armed Forces who are sacrificing their all so my family, like theirs, can experience the freedom that we have. It was then that I realized that I often take for granted my days in this world and forget about our awesome men and women in uniform. I wanted to do something to show my love and appreciation for our troops...write a song. I sat down and wrote a song that expresses my family's deep appreciation for our Armed Forces titled, We Thank You.
I didn't want my song to reflect any political aim or opinion, just a simple thank you to our troops who are doing an incredible job. After writing the song, We Thank You, I made a video (with my acoustic guitar) and posted it on youtube. I received many comments from people across the world who were blessed by the song. One person who contacted me was Garland Mason of Mobile, Alabama who lost his son Corporal Chris Mason in Iraq in November, 2006. Garland had created a myspace page dedicated to Chris and posted my youtube video of ..We Thank You.. on it. I was excited! After checking out Chris' site, I was honored. What an incredible soldier, son, brother, friend and most importantly, a godly man. A couple of weeks later, Garland emailed me and mentioned how impacted he was with my song and he asked if I would consider writing a song about Chris. I didn't have to think about it, I knew I wanted to do it. Not knowing Chris, I asked Garland if he was to write a song for his son, what would he want it to say? A few days later, Garland sent me an email saying that he wasn't a musician, just an old paratrooper, but he came up with some lyrics. When I read them, my heart was immediately captured. My hope is that this song will honor Chris Mason and our Troops who selflessly fight for our FREEDOM with their lives...
