About Me
Amy DuBois Barnett is an award-winning journalist, fiction writer and television commentator. She is currently the Deputy Editor in Chief of Harper’s Bazaar. Her first book: Get Yours! The Girlfriends’ Guide to Having Everything You Ever Dreamed of and More, will be published by Doubleday/Broadway Books in September of 2007.
Prior to her position at Harper’s Bazaar, Amy was the Managing Editor of Teen People, where she became the first African-American woman in the country to head a major mainstream magazine.
Prior to Teen People, Amy served as Editor in Chief of Honey Magazine for nearly three years where she redefined the editorial mission, developed a new table of contents, and implemented a complete visual redesign that included a new logo. Under Amy’s leadership, Honey’s rate base doubled and the advertising revenue increased by over 50 percent. Before Honey, she was with Essence, first as Fashion and Beauty Features Editor, and then as Lifestyle Editor. Amy has also held positions as the Managing Editor of both Fashion Almanac Magazine and Fashion Planet website.
Amy has appeared weekly as a pop culture correspondent for CNN’s American Morning and has been featured on numerous national television shows including The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show, Paula Zahn and on various programs on VH1, MTV and BET as an expert on fashion, pop culture, professional development and social issues. Amy has also been a regular on-air contributor to NPR’s News and Notes program.
A Brown University graduate, Amy also has an M.F.A. degree in creative writing from Columbia University and a certificate in fashion merchandising from Parson’s School of Design. She is the Vice-Chair of the editorial board of Brown Alumni Monthly magazine and is a board member of Girls Inc. of New York. In addition, she is a published author whose fiction has appeared in various journals and anthologies.
Amy won an Aldo award for fashion journalism from the Fashion Association and a Hurston/Wright award for creative writing. She has also received the Trailblazer Award from the New York Association of Black Journalists and the Beacon Award from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. She frequently speaks to social and professional organizations, including the Girl Scouts of America, the National Urban League, Jack and Jill and the National Association of Black Journalists.
