...give me one good reason not to do it...so do it

About Me

Real quick before we get to all those glorious tidbits about yours truly I wanted to let everyone know that alot of the songs I recently posted are from various groovy sessions I took part in by myself, the way I like it. The Painter and Back Around are from some acoustic demos I've been working on for this new cd. They were recorded on a lap top computer and mixed down on those tiny little 1/2 inch woofers(if there is such a thing) that are stock on the computer. I haven't heard them on anything but those speakers so I don't know what they really sound like...so if they sound shitty, that's why. I'm Without you was put on cassette to take home to listen to after a session at Tune Town Studios in Newton Falls, Ohio a few years ago and I liked it so I made a cd out of it with all this new fangled technology we have these days. It has alot of tape hiss. Sorry 'bout that. I hope you can forgive me. It probably won't be on the album. So download it while you can. As for the songs I posted on the other page, I'm now bored with all this explaining business so if I get a wild hair up my wazoo maybe I'll blog about it on the other page. This would be a great time to click over to it and add it to your friends list...unless, your listening to one of your favorite Paul Rader songs and just can't fathom the thought of switching pages at the moment. If this is the case then I forgive you...carry on.
ok, about me, about me...ummm, let's see, my favorite color is Emerald Green, I'm afraid of bees, I like to open all my doors and windows when it rains really hard, and I'm convinced that I was born a decade and a half too late. I've been playing guitar since I was 5 years old and writing songs since I was 9.
For the last 19 years I've been a "professional" musician which is the ABSOLUTE COOLEST job in the world. No other job in the world, that I can think of anyway, would actually encourage me to stay up all night drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, reading books, and writing music - unlessssssss, I was the midnight shift person who proofread all the pamphlets that needed to be turned into jingles for the R.J. Reynold's Corporation. I suppose just about anybody "could" do what I do but some of them might not want to. Weird hours out of the loop of the "sun people" makes for a lot of solitude but you get used to it.
I've released 5 Independent CD's and recorded maybe 80-some songs. There's about 2 and a half albums of music that hasn't been released yet and another 2 and half albums that hasn't even made it to tape yet. I can't keep up with it. I guess I like it like that. I mean, I'd hate to have a bunch of money to record with and not enough material, ya know? That would suck!
I write in a bunch of different genres of music which, as we all know, is an A&R person's DREAM, right? They hate me. Which is ok, I'm not particularly fond of them either. :) I kid you, I'm a kidder! I can go from some angst ridden punk dittie where I'm screaming my guts out to a pretty little acoustic ballad complete with beautiful melody and weepie, whiny vocals. For me, I guess, it's always been the only therapy I could afford.
I live in Key West, Florida right now. And, of course, I'm playing all your favorite tunes at Big 'Uns(formerly Bear Bottom Beach Club), 218 Duval Street. :) Stop in and say "Hey" if you're in town.
Did I mention that I hate "About Me" sections on these websites? No? Well, I do. I guess that's something else "about me" that you should know, huh? Ok, that's enough already. If you're still here you obviously have an attention span that far exceeds mine...
even more about Paul Rader
Paul Rader has been a part of the musical landscape of east coast, USA resort towns and cities big and small for nineteen years. His name is synonymous with cd releases of introspective, soul-bearing original music and a very unique all-acoustic tribute to classic rock called Land of the Cover Band.
Rader's original material is heavily influenced by artists like Elliott Smith and Neil Young on one side of the spectrum and by Adam Duritz(Counting Crows), Stone Temple Pilots, and The Beatles on another. He likes to make you think and his choice of subject matter is often deep and serious. He has a playful side too and is not afraid to make himself the butt of the joke if he thinks he can get a laugh out of it.
In February, 2008 Arcadian Records, an Atlanta based Independent record label, signed Paul to their roster and have plans of releasing his 6th solo recording this year. He will begin recording his debut collection of tunes for the label as early as the beginning of March 2008. This will be his first full-length release in three years. Paul has planted himself in the Key West, Florida area to perform and travels anywhere and everywhere to find an audience for his unique vocal and guitar skills. The working title for this new Cd is: King of the Underground

Paul Rader

Stand up comics always talk about how "naked" they are, standing up there with nothing between them and the audience but the mike and their wit. Singer/songwriters may have a guitar as a prop, but adding an instrument to the mix doesn't make you less naked, with the added liability of the drunks in the crowd shouting out criticisms of your guitar playing. These thoughts come to mind because Rader is part of a long tradition of wise-ass songwriters with a sense of the absurd and a dark sense of humor that brings to mind singers like Randy Newman (pre-Disney that is,) Tom Lehrer and Steve Goodman. Like those artists, Rader uses humor to investigate the darker side of life without going completely nuts, or as the old blues song says "You may be thinkin' that I'm laughin,' but I'm just tryna keep from cryin'." With just an acoustic guitar and a torrent of clever words Rader invites us to look at the world through his slightly skewed lenses.

"Century Home" opens with "Cincinnati," a ragtime guitar lament familiar to any open mike performer who tries to break through the indifference of a crowd with original material. "Don't Feel Like Jesus Today" might sound sacrilegious to some, but Rader's tortured vocal is a measure of the song's sincerity: "What can I say when I'm the one who needs to be saved?" The folk funk of "Hong Kong Fooey" takes a bleary eyed peek at Rader's teenage years, which seem to be a blur of parties, drinking, puking and buffoonery, while "Back From the Spoon" likens love to a heroin habit, or is it vice versa? It's a bleak tune, with Rader's humor walking that thin edge between comedy and disaster.

Paul gets his point across fine with just guitar and his solid vocal skills!

About " Land of the Cover Band Live - Vol. I "
Written by Keith "Muzic Man" Hannaleck on 7-27-2004

Land of the Cover Band is Paul Rader's Classic Rock tribute unplugged. The 14 tracks will joggle the cobwebs from your brain, bring back memories, and make you smile.

All covers on one CD - that is not unusual these days considering it is the age of the tribute and reissue albums so why not, besides, when you hear how good Paul Rader is you will immediately understand why he put this CD out. The dude can play and sing up a storm, and he does all of these classic tunes justice, giving them their due by playing his ass off and singing as if it was the last gig he would ever do.

Steve Miller, The Eagles, Cat Stevens, The Who, recognize the names? Well you probably do, and the young college crowd that gathered did too on the night this event took place in Key West, FL., during Spring break. '04. You can hear a lot of chatter and singing going on and above all you can hear the guitar and voice of Rader ringing on through the night. This is a very good live recording that really captures the atmosphere of the evening and the talent of this artist.

Fair warning for the younger listeners - if you hear this album, expect to be going out to buy at least 10 CDs by the honored bands.

About " Rader's Live Performances "
Posted by JR Isham from University of Tennessee on 2004-03-17

"Ok...check this out...I went down to Key West on spring break '04 and we rocked out with Paul every night after we discovered him. I play guitar myself, so I know how difficult it was to actually be able to play the stuff he was playing. Not only that, but as a soloist to sound like a complete band is unbelievably hard to do, but I couldn't believe how he captured the entire room... just him and his guitar. I was very impressed with him as a guitarist and also a vocalist. He's a grade A performer and I highly encourage anyone to have him as their performer for any Fraternity or Sorority function. If you invite him, I promise you will not be dissapointed and in fact you'll be a Hero!!! Paul will rock the place GUARANTEED!!! He's very down to earth and it seems as if he cares about his fans. Four words for ya... Paul is the man!!!"
