About Me

I love the huge range of music you can play on a trombone. I learnt to play it at a brass band and youth wind bands before spending 6 years as an army musician followed by uni. My day job now is teaching music which I also enjoy - especially composition and jazz.

I'm currently pretty active a 2 tone/ska covers band called The 2 Tones (UK) aka Ska Trek. Its great fun to play and bounce around too and is picking up quite a following in the Northampton area. I've penned the horn arrangements for it and they even let me play the odd solo. My wife, Elaine is the trumpet player. I've recently taken to doubling on an Akai EWI (Wind Synth) which is fun.
I also play lead trombone in an Ellington revival band called Harmony in Harlem I have played in various orchestras on tenor and alto trombone. On free Sunday mornings, I play along (improvise) with the worship band at church on trombone or piano. I can also play tuba.

I have directed/conducted a wide range of music sometimes in connection with my day job as a music teacher including: - orchestras, choirs, musicals, wind bands, brass bands, jazz groups, big bands/jazz orchestras, various rock/pop, reggae and even a bhangra group at one point. I'm currently focused on a big band, jazz combos and a huge junior wind band.

Since uni, I have written a fair amount of music for jazz bands and brass bands. I've also composed/arranged for orchestra, choirs and chamber music. Some of my brass band works were written when I played solo trombone for several years at Towcester Studio Band. You can find out more about my existing works or even buy them at www.colinbugby.co.uk (sheet music) or sibelius music (downloadable sheet music).

My Interests

Music:

Influences:

I love jazz, especially:
Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Dave Holland, Enrico Rava, Loose Tubes, Ellington, Count Basie and great singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. Great jazz trombonists, past and present include Mark Nightingale, Jiggs Wigham, Billl Watrous, Frank Rosolini, Fred Wesley, Robin Eubanks, JJ Johnson &; Kai Winding (my Dad left me an EP of the trombone octet). There are many other fantastic trombonist, some of which have allowed me to list them as friends on myspace.

Rico Rodriguez because he created the cool ska/reggae trombone sound. If you play his kind of music, he is huge - there's no avoiding him!

Great UK Orchestral trombonists including Ian Bousfield, Dudley Bright (he played in my classroom once actually!) and Philip Harrison (who had the misfortune to teach me for a while). These guy can knock you dead with a simple tuning note -the most gorgeous sound I know.

I have pretty eclectic tastes in pop music including:
especially Soul legends like Aretha Franklin and Sam 'n' Dave. Ska and Reggae including Desmond Dekker, UB40, Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners. I also like Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, U2, Spandau Ballet, Take That, Seal, Human League and lots and lots of trashy 70's and 80's pop. Current pop favourites including, Mika, Lilly Allen and Amy Winehouse.

My favourites orchestral works always include:
Mozart's Requiem, Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, Hindemith's Koncertmusik for Brass & Strings, Vaughan Williams's London Symphony and 'The Lark Ascending', Barber's Adagio for Strings, Schumann's Rhenish, Dvorak's New World and loads of other Symphonies. I also like Philip Sparke's works for band, especially 'Year of the Dragon' and his 'London Overture'.
My Dad remains huge inspiration to me. He never had a fancy career and was very much an amateur musician but he was kind, thoughtful, honest and had a sense of humour.
