Born in the Jazz capital, New Orleans, to Caribbean parents, Clifton Confident was surrounded by various styles of music. Inevitably enough, the instrumental music that he presents to us is a soothing and melodious mix of Caribbean vibes with Latin Jazz. The birth of Hip-Hop and R&B also influenced this musically inclined singer/songwriter, he often collaborates with his brother Leo to produce smooth, laid-back and hype hip-hop and R&B/Neo Soul tracks -- often laced with some Latin or jazz flavor. The lyrics of his songs are palatable by all audiences and are usually about experiences people can relate to. From the "Anxiety" of the first phone call to the pain of having to "Say Goodbye," and trying to get through "Just Another Day," Clif's songs are considered by many to be relaxing, comforting, uplifting, and sometimes entertaining. Many of his fans have been impressed with the maturity of his music.Presently enrolled at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, the twenty-seven year old, medical student began his musical career by improvising on the piano at the age of three. Following formal studies in violin and piano and a brief stint on saxophone in the fifth-grade band, Clif finally picked up the guitar in high school. Although he had only taken a total of four months of guitar lessons, Clif improved his guitar playing by ear -- figuring out songs off the radio, TV, CDs and tapes. In college, he took a semester of classical guitar. As a student at Rice University, Clifton Confident became synonymous with "The Undergrounds," a weekly open mike with free coffee in his dorm basement, taking both requests from the audience as well as playing his own original compositions. He also organized and accompanied performances by other aspiring musicians, singers and songwriters. In addition to the Undergrounds, Clif also participated in the Houston music scene with several successful shows at Ovations and the Mausoleum. He directed the school's gospel choir, Melodious Voices of Praise, and completed independent production of his first CD, "Musically Inclined -- Confident's Debut," during his senior year (April 2001) -- which has been very well received and has garnered some airplay in Miami, Boston, college radio, and internationally. Most recently, he was invited to perform and was well received in a showcase in Austin, TX -- as a part of the SXSW Music and Media Festival.
Clifton Confident has shared the stage with celebrated Caribbean guitarists like "Strings," Beethova Oba, and Toto Laraque -- but he has always had a heart for the audience. He enjoys playing his guitar while the audience sings along to whatever song they request. He especially enjoys getting people from the audience to come and sing a song with him.
Clif continues to perform by invitation and when he gets a break from school. Aside from medicine, he is currently working on a second CD entitled, "Inspiration." Graduated from Meharry Medical College, Clifton will be finishing his family medicine residency in Columbus, GA.
"I hope to be able, with medicine, to help people physically -- and with my music, to soothe them spiritually and emotionally." -- Clifton Confident
