He didn’t have to think twice of who he wanted to be a part of such a project. Playing shows in Boston creates quite a network of bands and promoters. Luckily, once and a while you make friends with some really great musicians. While playing with Sinapse, Nik was fortunate enough to make a lot of those friends. On more than one occasion, Sinapse had shared the bill with the likes of Constants, Junius, and Stoic. When Nik’s idea for the “super group†started gaining momentum, he immediately contacted his favorite musicians from each band. Nik knew he needed the heavy hands of Dana Filloon from Junius to make the beats he heard inside his head come alive. There was no doubt that Will Benoit of Constants could take every idea to the next level with the beautiful spaced out sounds of his guitar. And there isn’t a bassist that sounds quite like Jeff Kuznezov of Stoic.
One weekend of studio work and it was apparent that what they were writing was something that dug so much deeper than any of them ever imagined. There was instant chemistry, and it wasn’t forced. It just flowed out of each of them. They were putting a piece of their soul into what was at this point a “project†with a very clear direction. What started out as a cool side project became a band overnight. But the band was missing one key element…the vocals.
Originally the album was going to have different vocalists on each track, but as Nik said, “it was good enough to be its own thing.†What had been written thus far was so precious that it was important that the last piece of the puzzle not only fit, but enhance and emphasize what the guys had put into the music. While in the studio listening to the rough tracks, Will suggested Noelle LeBlanc of Damone and the Organ Beats. Nik tracked her down through a mutual friend, and they met up at the only place you ever meet up in New England, a Dunkin Donuts, in Brighton to be exact. In true “Noelle†fashion, she didn’t bat an eyelash at taking a listen. Over the next few days, she laid down some rough vocals to show Nik the direction she was headed with the songs. And that was it. Nik was sold. She was it, the missing piece, the breath of life.
Over the next few months, there were a few trips to the studio to lay it all down and get the collective juices, and umm… whiskey flowing. During the sessions, moments of spontaneous creativity have resulted into intriguing interludes that blend the album into a perfect consistency. When you listen to any track, there is this overwhelming emotion that breathes through and speaks to your core, which is fitting for a band with such a strong name.
Any time you mention religion, ears are going to perk up and want to know a little more. Nik figured by combining a strong subject matter with the essence of the beautiful nature of women would create an unmistakable name. Not only that but Goddess of My Religion is a metaphor for finding solace, comfort, faith, and hope in whatever inspires you. And that alone speaks true to what you will find in the music of this accidental band.
