About Me

At four years old, Carlos Calvo was inspired by the sound of the Beatles and overcome by the need to learn to play their songs on guitar. An uncle who knew how to play a bit taught him “And I Love Her.” At seven, Carlos began classical and flamenco guitar training under the renowned Juan de la Mata, a mentorship that lasted 11 years and which developed in Carlos elevated technique and deep understanding of music rarely found in modern guitar players. These childhood experiences would become the pillars of Carlos’ music, which strives for the Beatles’ perfection of Pop song-structure, while incorporating the rich and intricate elements of the Spanish guitar.
At 18, Carlos moved to L.A. to further his musical training at the Musicians Institute, where he graduated with one of only two top honors. What would furthest deepen his understanding of music would be to share that knowledge. He has been teaching guitar privately for more than 20 years. As a teacher, Carlos has been greatly rewarded by seeing his students soar to great heights. Many pupils have gone on to major in music in college, become professional musicians, and one has even become a multiple Grammy-winning artist.
In the 90’s Carlos tasted success co-fronting a band that opened for the likes of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Willy Porter. These phenomenal musical experiences would lead him to embark on a career as a solo artist in 2001. His 2002 release of Past Present Future was named one of the Top 25 Independent Releases by Music Connection Magazine.
As a professional musician, Carlos has performed in countless recording sessions and tallied a wide range of credits, including three seasons working with composer Lance Rubin to create the score for television’s King of the Hill. His teaching has expanded into the world of film and television where he has coached actors to portray guitarists on productions such as Showtime’s Californication and the independent film depicting the legendary Muddy Waters in Who Do You Love. Recently, Carlos has returned to the stage and is writing and recording new material for an upcoming CD release.
