MEDINA. . .up and coming singer/songwriter from the D.C. area is hotter than the sun! MEDINA’s style is reminiscent of early Faith/Kelly Price with jazz inflections here and there. And when utilizing her operatic training, her high C would make Mariah proud! MEDINA has a silky soprano voice that glides over notes effortlessly and when she dips into her sultry alto, the quality of the sound is timeless! Musically speaking, her inspirations run the gamut from Anita Baker and Sheila E, to Biggie Smalls and Sade. A force to be reckoned with,, MEDINA is steadily creating a name for herself as a dynamic performer and stellar songwriter. With stunning looks, and operatic and jazz vocal training to boot, this honey has definitely got the goods and will undoubtedly be entertaining us for years to come!
After years of early training, she took over the stage at the Apollo Theatre, at the age of twelve! Requests soon came to perform at D.C.’s Mayoral campaigns and by 15, MEDINA had assistant directed a play and performed at the Kennedy Center . From that point on , she knew singing would be her life and the stage, her world.
MEDINA graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, in D.C., with both an academic degree and a degree in vocal music. She then attended Howard University to further her education in music. In the summer of 2000, she decided that the time had come to attack the city of New York head on! Soon after arriving, she was asked to perform “The National Anthem†at the World Kickboxing Championships. Securing an internship at Spike Lee’s film production company, Forty Acres and A Mule, MEDINA sought to familiarize herself with all aspects of the industry.
Then in 2004, Medina was given the opportunity of a lifetime- working for Pres. of Atlantic Records, Julie Greenwald, as the first executive intern! This was a dream come true! Additionally, she has worked, as a singer and songwriter, with some of the hottest producers in the music industry today including Troy Taylor (“All Because Of You†sung by Marques Houston ), J-Praize (“Wanksta†by 50Cent), Yogi of P. Diddy’s HitMen (“ Bad Boy Anthemâ€), Vada Nobles(The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) and many more. She also recorded material with StreetLife, Shells, Inspectah Deck of Wu-Tang, Def Jam’s Sam Scarfo and Andrea. She wrote four of the songs that will be featured on Andrea’s debut album, wrote and sang a track on Scarfo’s debut and co-wrote a track on CityHigh’s sophomore album.
Recognizing that there is strength in numbers, MEDINA sought out knowledge and support from female industry veterans such as LaTonya Blige DaCosta and Shaka Dopwell of Chocolate and Vanilla Mgmt., Ms. Umi Smith, (who has guided the career of her son, Mos Def to where it is now), Deborah Gregory (acclaimed author of THE CHEETAH GIRLS series), Lydia Coleman and Tippi Shorter (owner and celebrity stylist of SOHO’s exclusive Luxe Studio), legendary percussionist Sheila E and many other influential women.
