About Me

The 15th edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival will take place from 12th till 20th August 2oo9..
Sarajevo Film Festival is an international film festival with a specific goal of supporting and promoting regional cinema and authors. To this end Sarajevo Film Festival also founded a regional co-production market CineLink. Due to this regional focus, the festival is recognized by FIAPF as a Competitive Specialized Festival.
Sarajevo Film Festival represents the main meeting place for all regional producers and authors and is recognized by film professionals from all over the world as the pinnacle point for networking for all wishing to learn more about the possibilities this region has to offer.
FESTIVAL HISTORY..... In the last two decades OBALA ART CENTER (established in 1984) has contributed, with its projects and programs in the domain of visual arts, theatre, film (presentation and production), and cultural education to the life of BiH.
During the war, in 1995, the Centre decided to establish Sarajevo Film Festival. In the beginning, it looked like a Utopia, like fighting the windmills. Nobody could have thought that the war dream of a group of enthusiasts would grow into the most important event .. not only in BiH, but in the whole region. In those days, Sarajevo was isolated from the outside world; the Festival became its window. Moving pictures could not stop the shooting and shelling, but they helped the citizens of Sarajevo get out of the vicious circle, to see the outside world and, in the same time, to make the world aware of their suffering and struggle in the besieged city. These pictures definitely did not impress politicians, but they did move artists across the world.
Years go by and the Festival goes on living and growing from one year to another.. 15, 000 viewers at the very beginning grew into more than 100, 000, while 37 films have now grown to 180. More than 30,000 children from all over BiH enjoyed the screening of Childrens Program. For this, the Skenderija Centers Sport Hall was especially re-arranged and turned into a cinema with more than 3,000 seats and with probably the biggest screen in Southeast Europe.
Many famous guests include Anthony Minghella, Mike Leigh, Bono Vox, Carol Bouquet, Enki Bilal, Gerard Depardieu, Jafari Panahi, John Malkovich, Peter Mullan, Fatih Akin, Juliette Binoche, Steve Buscemi, Jeremy Irons, Michael Moore, Vanessa Redgrave & William Dafoe... The redefined concept of the Regional Program puts SFF into the focus and makes it the most important point for the promotion of regional films.
Sarajevo Film Festival has discovered many filmmakers throughout its running who are now successful and recognized. In the past years, the Festival has also acted as a catalyst and a platform for the promotion of important initiatives
