The Psychedelic Safari

Tune In, Turn On and Psych Out

About Me

The Psychedelic Safari was founded in the small Appalachian town of Keyser, WV in 1985. This visionary band introduced experimental sound and visual techniques that advanced modern studio recording methods and gave birth to what is now known as "performance art". These techniques included the use of singing through fast-moving fan blades into low-fi microphones, breaking glass, using models to display rare paintings during performances, and using samples from phone recordings. In the 80's, the band operated as a three-piece of the core members with visiting artists brought in to offer their own interpretations of the Safari's songs - a technique never before seen or replicated to this very day. Further, the band often swapped instruments to introduce randomness and originality into their creative process - a technique only now being adopted. The band was notorious for its irregular, improptu, and often deafening gigs. In 1987, the Psychedelic Safari entered the "Guiness Book of World Records" as the world's loudest band, effectively displacing "The Who". In fact, the band was so loud, that many listeners experienced auditory hallucinations that revealed hidden sections within the songs. There were are at least two known deaths attributed to merely listening to the Psychedleic Safari. To quote Bunzel, a former painting model who would often appear with the band and display paintings paintings during shows that depicted apocalyptic visions of bullfighters in hell. "I now live in complete deafness from my association with the Safari, but it was worth it." The band once shattered a priceless clock due to the sonic pressure created in the rehearsal space. The Psychedelic Safari went on hiatus following drummer Shatter Citron being commited by Boron Truss and Math Smart to the WV State Mental Hospital in Weston for the $50 finders fee. This windfall was used to buy styrofoam wig heads that they suction-cupped to their "levitation car" to instill fear in the public. Truss and Smart mutually agreed to terminate their association due to hating each others origin as Truss was from Keyser and Smart was from New Creek. This mutual jingoism culminated in a massive melee in a local church basement. An additional incident seemingly ended the relationship when Truss stabbed Smart in the leg with a fork while attending the party of a mutual friend. Smart continued to pursue his diverse musical interests and founded a solo, acapella shockabilly act that was subsequently booed off the stage at the 1989 Mineral County Fair. Boron quit playing music altogether and founded a cult serving as its leader and sole member. In retrospect, the band's music was criminally underappreciated as most humans could not interpret its meaning and became lost in its otherworldly and futuristic sonic landscape. Only today have followers begun to appreciate the contributions of this band to influence the sound of countless acts in music history. After a 20-year hiatus, the original line-up of the Psychedelic Safari have reunited and are currently working on their sceond album, "In Accordance with the Prophecy". Please join our friend list to receive forthcoming announcements on our gigs, album release and merchandise. ***The pending gigs have been pushed back to Fall 2007 as Boron Truss is recovering from a bizarre gender-changing injury sustained while sitting in a recliner.***
