About Me

HORSE FLIES' NEW ALBUM, UNTIL THE OCEAN,HAS JUST BEEN RELEASED!!!

YOU CAN ORDER IT NOW!!A violinist and fiddler, Judy writes music for film and plays in bands.
In June 2006 she won an Emmy for her score for the PBS documentary The Cultivated Life: Thomas Jefferson and Wine. She also scored two interactive DVDs for the National Library of Medicine titled Dream Anatomy and Changing the Face of Medicine. With husband, Jeff Claus, she composed the music for feature films The Year that Trembled and Disappearances, PBS documentaries (for Florentine Films/Hott Productions) Through Deaf Eyes and John James Aubudon: Drawn from Nature and a documentary video that has been running for several years in the exhibit at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. With the Horse Flies she played a leading role in composing the music for feature film scores Where the Rivers Flow North and A Stranger in the Kingdom.Judy has played on and created string arrangements for numerous albums for a variety of artists. Critics have described her work as "haunting", "gorgeous", "sepia-tone", ""stirring", "powerful", "impressive", "beautiful", "rousing" . . .She's a founding member of two bands ... the alt-trad Horse Flies ... and indie-rock Boy with a Fish .The Flies have toured extensively in the U.S., Canada, and Europe; recorded 7 albums, including releases on MCA and Rounder Records; been featured on MTV, Prairie Home Companion, All Things Considered, World Cafe and Mountain Stage; and been written about in Rolling Stone, Musician Magazine, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and many other major publications.Overground Magazine said of Boy with a Fish's first album, "Claus' voice sounds like the product of a masterful combination of the best parts of Neil Young and Michael Stipe. There is an eerie ambience created chiefly by the electric violin and the accordion. ... addictively groovable ... and the quirkiness is endearing ... the end result is signature, edgy, and big-time hip.

During the summers of 2000 and 2004, Judy performed with pop singer Natalie Merchant's band (which was also joined by Flies band-mate Richie Stearns). She played on Ms. Merchant's album "The House Carpenter's Daughter" (2003, Myth America Records). The album's lead cut is "Sally Ann" a song by hubbie Jeff which the band performed on Late Night with David Letterman in 2004. (It also appears on Ms. Merchant's "Retrospective" album.)Judy also plays in various fiddle music bands.
