I am here for Friends

About Me

Stephanie Householder-Walker. 26. Ohioan. Happily married to Bill since December 27, 2005. Will earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature (with a Women's Studies minor) from Wright State University this winter, then plans to attend graduate school at Drexel University to earn a Master's degree in Library and Information Science. Child-free by choice (most likely until we're in our early 30s & ready to settle down more). Owner of an orange-hued Pomeranian dog named Luigi . Owes everything to God. Lover of words, sounds, and artistic aesthetics. Currently at work on completing her first young adult fiction novel. Not your stereotypical anything.
I'm the woman you see walking across campus in my trusty Birkenstocks, singing along to the sounds of Bjork and Ani DiFranco as they blare from my headphones. One might label me a music fiend, but my love of the written word is far greater. If you're sitting next to me on the campus shuttle bus, you might find me digging through my backpack and pulling out tattered copies of The Grammar Bible and Writing Down the Bones. You may note that I have a bad habit of toting around the latest issues of my favorite magazines (Bust and Real Simple, natch), and that I scrawl random bits of poetry on my hand during boring classes. I keep many journals, including the makeshift one on my hand.
I'm smitten by everyday occurrences and find that moments of revelation, thankfulness, and seeing beauty everywhere are the true cause of my happiness. Star-gazing on a clear night with Bill, the man I've been coupled with since January of 2003 and married to since December 27, 2005, makes my insides tingle and my heart race. He grew up in Greenville, OH and we met in January of 2003 in a class at Wright State University. He and I have waded through large puddles together after a thunderstorm, explored a dairy farm, and become friends with a street minister who has preached at over 300 college campuses. Despite being an adventurous duo, we need nothing more than a blanket, a yard, and one another to be content. It is our shared sense of humor, values, and zeal for life that bond us. Bill spent five years attending college at Wright State University and Ohio State University where he majored in Pre-Medicine and Education. However, he decided to withdraw from college after receiving a lucrative job offer (excellent wage, medical benefits, etc.) from a national corporation whose headquarters are located only a few miles from our home. He plans to return to college and earn his degree (in Mathematics Education) in the near future, but for right now his salary is much more than most college graduates earn and it has provided us with a chance to save money for a house, new cars, and vacations. Though he works 12 hours per day and often works overtime, I adore him and his desire to provide us with the finer things in life.
I thrive on long conversations with friends, earl grey tea, and watching the sun go down on the horizon. My music collection spans hundreds of CDs from Stereophonics to Enya to Belle and Sebastian to Slaughter, but my love affair will always be with Fleetwood Mac. Driving on a sunny day with the windows and sun roof open on my Dodge Avenger, the voice of Stevie Nicks makes everything seem possible.
I'm quiet. I'm loud. I read the Bible on a daily basis (how does one agree or disagree with the text if they've never read it?), but still depend on bathroom humor and un-politically correct comedians to make me laugh my arse off. I was almost killed in a car accident in 1999 and nearly went blind in 2000 due to faulty contact lenses (I now suffer from corneal abrasions and recurrent corneal erosion --and will suffer from this and a host of eye infections for the rest of my life), but believe I was spared each time. I believe something divine intervened, which served to strengthen and renew my faith in God. Nonetheless, I can't stand those who push their faith on me, some televangelists, and those who refuse to find the humor in life. And I believe God has a sense of humor. I'm spiritual, not religious.
& Random Facts: I'm a simple farm girl who used to desire the big city--but found small town blood runs through my veins. I adore simplicity, wonder, and genuine smiles. My family is my backbone. I'm compassionate, yet sarcastic. I hate waking up early, but stay up way too late. I like the feeling of hot pavement under my feet and the cool grass of a country field. Abandoned houses and buildings capture my attention; centuries old schoolhouses and farmhouses especially intrigue me. The art of the medieval period enchants me, yet my apartment decor is bohemian chic and asian. I burn incense and potpourri in every room of my apartment. I think dollar store shopping sprees are good for the soul. I like off-beat people, films, and places. I like old-fashioned chivalry, although I consider myself a feminist. I drink only distilled water. My parents call just to talk and say they love me. I spend hours in bookstores and libraries. I am anti-war and very pro-peace. I consider my two younger brothers as close friends. My parents divorced when I was 18 and it devastated me. Death has always surrounded my family and it scares me. My grandparents are Russian and barely escaped the Communist rule. Give me lyrics with meaning over a good beat any day. I love board games. I subscribe to 34 magazines. I will earn my Master's degree from Drexel University. My niche is academia. I want to work as an academic librarian for a secondary school or university. I love knowledge. My husband and my father are my favorite cooks. I wear peasant skirts and Birkenstocks nearly all of the time. I own over 650 books. I believe in second chances. I love my hair and have not cut it since 2003. I've been writing online since 1996. I was raised a devout Catholic, married a former Baptist in a Methodist church, was baptized as a Catholic (as an infant) and as a Pentecostal (at age 24) and am now a non-denominational Christian. I don't believe in being fake in any way. I'm addicted to A&E and Game Show Network. I love having a good snail mail day. I shop on eBay way too much. I've had depression and generalized anxiety disorder for eight years now. I have an independent spirit. I've never worn heels or stilettos and have no desire to ever do so. I pray more times a day than I can count. I'm blunt. I'm weird. I smile often. I laugh frequently. Oh, and I write--a lot.

Books:

My writer and librarian mother started reading to me the moment I was born. At the age of 3, I learned to read on my own and began a lifelong obsession with books and words. While most children begged to go to the playground or toy store, I begged to go to bookstores and libraries. To add the weirdness, I'm known to read coupons, ads, and telephone books if nothing else is available to me.
I have 750 books on my bookshelf (and in various storage locations) that I have yet to read, but I continue to buy more. I convince myself that someday I will have time to read them all--and plus, there is something oddly comforting about possessing so many books. The aisles of literary fiction, classic and world literature, and biographies are my first stops in bookstores, but I also harbor a secret love for (shhh!) true crime, teen literature, chick-lit, and self-help novels. For proof see my Amazon wishlist here .
