About Me

Where were you in 1988? When the Sunset Strip overflowed with Heavy Metal Fans every night of the week, when Guns & Roses Ruled the music Industry, When Heavy Metal was King!! If you weren't on the Strip you were not in the scene. Flyer wars, Pay to Play, trying to make a name for themselves musicians and bands from all over the world flocked to Los Angeles trying to get a piece of the pie. Heavy Metal was everywhere. Headbangers Ball on Saturday Night on MTV, KNAC 105.5 was the most famous Metal Station of all time, The Cathouse was in Full swing in Hollywood and 2500+ bands were fighting for slots at a handful of venues in Los Angeles. The Whisky, The Roxy, Gazzarri's, The Troubadour, FM Station, The Country Club, THe Waters Club, Exposure 54, Club Lingerie and a few more smaller venues were fought for in a war of Self Promotion and in the street face to face spreading the word. The chances of "making it" were slim but Danny James knew the chances of slim were better than the chances of none which was what he faced if he and his brother vocalist Jeffrey Michael James stayed in Phoenix and continued playing cover songs in bars. No chance there. So after writing and rehearsing and eventually recording a 4 song demo it was decided to uproot and head to Los Angeles in Pursuit of fame and fortune. Leaving all they knew behind with a pickup truck filled with equipment, Danny & Jeffrey ventured to Hollywood. Without a drummer and a promise from Guitarist JD Brittyn to join them when they found a new drummer, The Phoenix band Nytro (as they were known) were determined to make a mark in the LA music scene. They had no idea what was in store for them and LA had no idea what was coming to town.<

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

The search was on for a solid drummer. After almost 6 months of auditions Jeremy Crowther was chosen as the drummer for Nytro. Now the promoting would begin, clubs were to be contacted, and spreading the word on the street would be crucial. Just as the promo packs and other promotional material was finished the band was faced with a major setback. A former band mate of Danny & JD had moved out to Hollywood several months before the James brothers with his band TUFF. Vocalist Jim Gillette didn't stay with TUFF very long; his talent and multi octave range brought many opportunities to the young singer. He opted for a partnership with Trick guitarist Michael Angelo and when they were deciding on a name for their project Gillette remembered the Band that Danny & JD were in when they met and he suggested their band name Nytro only changing the spelling to NITRO. Frustrated but determined not to lose focus Danny and Jeffrey decided on the name KNIGHTRIOT. New material was prepared, a logo was created and suddenly the band had a sense of Identity that would set them apart from all the other bands. KNIGHTRIOT was born. Rehearsing nonstop for several months, fine tuning the songs Danny had written and continued writing, they prepared for their debut performance and the unveiling of Knightriot to The Sunset Strip. Relentless promoting brought rewards from the very beginning. Debuting at Gazzarri's with well over 100 fans there to specifically see KNIGHTRIOT, the press quickly took notice and when the band played the Troubadour a week later and once again drew more than 100 ticket holders people started taking notice. The reviews on the shows were filled with praise and questions. Who were these guys called KNIGHTRIOT and where did they come from? Will they be able to continue with this success? The answer was YES! The next show on the bands calendar shot them to a coveted Saturday night gig at The WHISKY A GO GO (although it was the last slot @ 12:30am which generally finds the band playing to an empty house). Such was not the case on this Saturday night. With one problem after another the bands at the Whisky way behind schedule this Saturday in October 1988 but the near sold out crowd was energetic none the less. By the time KNIGHTRIOT was told it was Showtime the clock read 1:45am. Surely the crowd had dissipated by now but the show must go on they reminded each other, but the band vowed to give whoever remained a show to remember. When they walked out on stage the surprise of seeing nearly the entire sold out crowd was like a shot of adrenaline. The crowd stuck around just to see this band called KNIGHTRIOT. And they were rewarded for their loyalty with one of the most energetic and furious shows by LA's new Heavy Metal Hopefuls. KNIGHTRIOT earned the respect of promoters, fans and many musicians that night. There was no turning back now......soon they would be HEADLINING!
