Raised in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, John's musical interests began at age 7 when he began playing trumpet under the instruction of his grandfather, Homer Gilbert. Homer, an accomplished musician of over 60 years, gave John a strong foundation in music theory and composition. By age 12 he was playing trumpet, guitar, and singing in his grandfather's dance band, The Homer Gilbert Orchestra. Guitar was an instrument introduced to him by his father, John Henry Ramey, who introduced him to music influences such as Bob Dylan. John participated in music through high school playing in the symphonic band (trumpet), Jazz band (bass) as well as singing in the choir. John's athletic interests earned him all-conference, all-district, and all-state awards in high school football. After attending Jackson High School he went to Southeast Missouri State University, where he played quarterback on a football scholarship.
After college John took a summer job at Cedar Point Amusement Park (Sandusky, Ohio)as the lead singer in a 50's rock show and then decided to give Nashville a try. Since signing with H.E.G. in 1995, John has had serveral songs he's written recorded by artists such as Tracy Byrd, Joe Nichols, Neal McCoy, Andy Griggs, Doug Supernaw, Rick Trevino, Brad Martin, Cody McCarver and The Marshall Tucker Band, as well as the 1998 Ty Herndon hit "A Man Holdin' On to a Woman Lettin' Go."
He is currently in the studio working on a project with longtime friend and co-writer Brad Martin, as a member of new Nashville duo Martin Ramey. Martin Ramey are on Curb records and are being produced by Doug Johnson, Richard Bennett, and Bobby Terry. Look them up at www.myspace.com/martinramey
