About Me
It was on sunny day in June 1984 that Kay-Ann Lewis made her arrival into the world and she immediately made an impact. Born in Olympic Gardens in Jamaica, " this sweet girl", according to the doctor handling the delivery, for the first-time. Ever since and from that day she became known as "Candy" to her family, Candy to her friends and now Candy to her fans. That name seems to be ordained by fate. So how did this bright-eyed,bubbly young lady get to have fans? The answer, which everyone in Jamaica who hasn't lived under a rock for the last year or so will know, is Rising Star. This massive talent competition, sort of like the United States American Idol, saw Candy finishing in the top-four out of a field od thousands- not easy task for a female DJ in competition dominated by singers. This success has resulted in a big recording contract, perfromances on shows like Magnum Sting 2004, non stop playing of music and recognition wherever she goes. Candy loves clothes. She's crazy about dressing up, although she's most comfortable with a sexy or sporty look. and with her model figure, just about anything she wears looks good on her. When in her designer mode, Candy snatches her handy scissors and creates something new from something old. For her dressing sexy is not about impressing someone else. "Girls like to dress sexy. It makes them feel good. It's not about looking for a man, but celebrating the fact that we can wear anything we want, especially when our bodies are tip-top shape." Currently single, Candy is also philosophical about her taste in men. "A man with a six pack and a cute face is every girl's fantasy, including mine. So in the video for "Lust" the guy is a hunk. But in reality it's really about respect, love and the actions that come with them," she says. In her choice of lyrics, Candy is philosophical."I do not disrespect women. I admire the men and in"But him" I didn't mean that she must cheat on him. No. It means leave him; yuh know - bun him out Capleton way. Run dat. Because why should the woman do a wrong thing which would be to cheat, if he's cheating or giving trouble?" Candy also has a stance on anti-homsexual lyrics - a stance that in the Jamaican culture of active gay-bashing, may seem different from the norm. She gives her reasons. "I don't need to write songs about homosexuals, because I don't believe in preaching to people about sexual practices. While you are there chastasing a certain group on stage, one or more may be your fans and so you wilfully hurt someone who loves you. Whatever people do in their bedrooms are their business, not mine," says Candy. Since risng to local stardom, Candy has met Tanya Stephens. "She came over to me and said,'What a gwaan, big DJ? You remind me of me when I was younger.' She said that I and Renee are like her,"says Candy. They've been freinds since then.
