The UB Society of Feminists (UBSoFem) will promote equality and understanding of feminist-based issues through education, awareness, and activism, UBSoFem will work with University at Buffalo (UB) students, faculty, and staff to encourage their empowerment around issues of inequality on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. The feminist platform that we advocate for extends to social, political, economic, and cultural issues working towards the enlightenment of all genders about the constraints of the patriarchal structure. UBSoFem is a feminist-based organization that welcomes perspectives and individuals from all disciplines and professions.
UBSoFem was founded in October 2006 by a group of feminist social work students enrolled at SUNY at Buffalo’s School of Social Work in the Masters in Social Work Program. Seeing a need for a feminist-based organization within their program and the school-at-large, they banded together to form the Social Work Organization of Feminists (SWOOF). The organization welcomed students from all graduate programs. Embracing various graduate-level disciplines the SWOOF’s founding sisters called for a name change in order to be more inclusive of all. In March of 2007 organization members voted to change their name is UB Society of Feminists and UBSoFem was born.
